Do Yeast Cells Mutate Based upon Temperature?

Yep, and I love the fact I can change the temps on that yeast to make it do some different things...but normally I use a fresh pitch and not reuse. I want to reuse and want to make sure the yeast I'm reusing (which fermented at 68) will be the same yeast when I then ferment it at 63. Thanks!

Do Yeast Cells Mutate Based upon Temperature?

I like to use Kolsch yeast for a lot of different styles, and change my fermentation temperature to pull different characteristics. For example, I'm fermenting a Cream Ale right now at 68, but would like to reuse that yeast for an American Wheat and ferment that at 63. Can anyone tell me if...

Pitch Rate for American Wheat Using Kolsch Yeast?

That's what I was thinking...thanks for seconding my opinion.

Pitch Rate for American Wheat Using Kolsch Yeast?

I would like to use a Kolsch yeast for an American Wheat. Normally, when I use the Kolsch yeast to make...well, a Kolsch...my yeast pitch rate is based upon a hybrid style...more than an ale, less than a lager. If I'm using a Kolsch to make an American Wheat, is my cell count based upon a...

It's for a 200+ gallon kettle - plus I have access to free welding!

    Mild Steel for False Bottom?

    Well, I blew that, didn't I? Thanks!

    Mild Steel for False Bottom?

I bought a perforated stainless steel sheet from McMaster-Carr to build a false bottom for my brewing kettles. When I took it to my welder to cut it and weld a stand for it, he said it was mild steel and not good for food grade applications. Anyone know anything about "mild steel" and food...

    Used Stainless Steel Drum Cleaning/Use

Update: I've been holding off on cleaning these as I've had my welders working on installing all of the ferrules. But I'm feeling confident they are going to do the job! Here's a link to some of the pics: https://flic.kr/s/aHskxFTZic

    Used Stainless Steel Drum Cleaning/Use

I was able to snag them for $500 per vessel, which I was happy with....although it cost me almost $400 to have them freighted from NJ to WI! I'm hoping to get close to 5bbl in a single run. Might be closer to 4.5, but it will be a hell of a lot of beer! I'll keep everyone posted as I progress!

    Used Stainless Steel Drum Cleaning/Use

Yep! I pulled the trigger and got three of them. They are amazing. I am working with a welder to now install some tri-clover ferrules, building a false bottom, etc.... My plan is to be brewing on these bad boys as a licensed brewery by the end of the year!

    Used Stainless Steel Drum Cleaning/Use

I was told by the seller that the ink was stored directly in the tank and not in a bag. He did send me the MSDS sheet, which I've attached. Anyone good at reading these things and let me know what they think?

    Used Stainless Steel Drum Cleaning/Use

I'm attaching the pictures that I received - one I just recently got and it shows the inside really well and it appears to be good shape. Let me know what you think! I'm getting encouraged to pull the trigger!

    Used Stainless Steel Drum Cleaning/Use

Yeah, I'm not sure if I'm going to have much of a choice. They are being sold out of New Jersey (I'm Wisconsin)...I'll have to buy them site unseen and have them shipped :-( Thanks for your insights on the ink!

Well, I'm investigating the feasibility of a nano, and the size and price is right!

Good point on the seam...these are huge 200 gallon barrels and it will be hard to get down in there the way it is!

    Used Stainless Steel Drum Cleaning/Use

Everyone - I am in need of some advice regarding reusing stainless steel drums, as I just don't know enough about SS. I am looking at acquiring some stainless steel drums that were previously used to store water-based ink. Does anyone have any idea if something like this could be cleaned and...

Anyone Ever Weigh Their Freshly Picked Hops?

Yup, but I'm trying to figure out how many ounces of fresh hops I'll have in a 5 gallon bucket. I'm trying to figure out if I have enough for a 10 gallon batch. I obviously won't know until I pick them, and I like to pick them as I'm mashing....

Anyone Ever Weigh Their Freshly Picked Hops?

Last year I filled up a 5 gallon bucket with freshly picked hops, but I never thought of weighing them to see how much I ended up with. Anyone got a general estimate on how many ounces you'd get out of a 5 gallon bucket? Planning a wet-hopped brew when I pick them, but trying to figure out how...
