Do you know how to make a yeast starter? Then why not farm yeast and freeze it?

Just a quick update. I still have some frozen jars of pacman in the freezer from 2012 and they come back to life just fine every year. I only have a couple left, so I'll be plating some out this summer and making a fresh batch. I haven't noticed any differences from year to year in lag time or...

    re-using yeast

Yes, you can do that. Or you can save yeast from the primary. It's usually best to make a starter from the harvested yeast, but you can pitch directly into new wort if you prefer. Mr. Malty has a descent calculator for telling you how much to re-pitch. You can find it here.

    Large Starters

I use glass jugs. I hand picked them from a few dozen and chose ones that had flatter bottoms though. Fruit stands and orchards are a good place to look for empty jug buys. Not really an option this time of year though.

    Liquid Yeast Sux

Liquid yeast most certainly does not suck. Check the dates on the packs and get fresh ones. If they don't have any, come back later. If you buy online, call the vendor and ask about the dates. I do that when I order yeast.

Storage at room temperature - kegs vs bottles

    1. The beer should keep well in kegs, I wouldn't worry about it. 2. Sounds fine to me.

    Questions on primary only brewing

Primary only is perfectly fine. 3-4 weeks is typical for me. 6 wouldn't be a problem at all. Just crash once you're sure it's done and keg it up. And yes, you would be dry hopping in the bucket after primary dies down. On the other hand, there's nothing wrong with using a secondary. I...

Hey guys. Good to see you're all still hanging out here and doing well. I keep meaning to log in and see how things are going, but never do. Got married in September. Time has never flown by so fast for me this past year and a half. I have a feeling that's just going to get worse. Anyway...

Seasons Greetings Late Nighters I think this is probably the longest stretch I've stayed away from HBT since I found this place. Life just seems to slowly change trajectory and you drift away from some things. Hope this finds you all well and good. I"m totally with you on the hunger...

Funny story. Went to a BBQ with my girl yesterday. Took some home brew, of course. One of the guys tried it and cringed. You could tell right away that he didn't like it. Then he says "Meh, that tastes like that Two Hearted Ale I tried the other day." I thanked him sincerely for the...

Hey guys. Sound like all is well for the most part. Dan didn't burn in the fire, Ischiavo has a good bit of wine put up, LRB has some new homebrewing events to look forward to thanks to new legislation, Sharona lost a big post though (that always sucks :( ) and things are finally turning around...

Hey late nighters. Did my disappearing act again. Been a busy couple weeks. Getting my brew mistress trained up right. Been together a month and I've already got her harvesting hops with me....I think she's a keeper :) Got a bumper crop of CTZ this year. My centennial got ate up by...

I once saws a man covered in tattoos, wearing nothing but a tattered pair of shorts with a gutted television set on his head walking around my college campus. He had a tribal drum in one arm and was tapping away the most inexplicable rhythm I have ever heard. It was something I will never forget.

    Using dried whole hops

Dried hops. I've never used fresh ones. Your math may vary, but plan on whole leaf hops absorbing about a pint per ounce. Make adjustments after that based on your initial results.

That would be awesome. I tend to lurk around and see what's up too, even though I don't participate in the conversation all the time. Been digging on a new lady here lately. You never know...I might even settle down one of these days. I look about 10 years younger than I really am....so the...

    Yeast starter dead?

If you didn't make a yeast starter, then I would definitely go and get more yeast. If you did make a starter and it seemed to go ok, then I would wait and see. Always make a starter and you won't have to worry.
