    Smallest Fermentation Fridge

Has anyone outfitted their avanti with a light bulb (or other) to keep fermentation temp. up if ambient temp is too low? If so, how'd ya go about it? It seems like you'd have to drill a hole in the side (and seal it) for the cord.

    Wort temp during high krausen

I use an aquarium heater in a bucket of water that the carboy sits in to control fermentation temp. I have compared the temperature of the water to the internal temperature of the wort throughout fermentation and I get a 3-4 degree difference when fermenation is just picking up and ramping down...

Newb looking for opinions on my first recipe

That looks like a solid recipe for an Irish Red. If you want to experiment with an American style red, you could bump up to like 8 lb of extract and use at least twice the amount of hops, and maybe even try dry hopping (adding hops to the carboy near the end of fermentation). A good way to...

    Newbie brewer questions

Putting hot wort in a glass carboy would likely cause it to crack. Also, the benefit to cooling in the kettle is that you can use an immersion wort chiller, which makes cooling MUCH faster. I use glass carboys for the primary. They are much easier to keep clean than plastic, star-san does the...

    Quinoa Pale Ale

One of the Brewing Science abstracts on this page has some information about beta-amylase activity with different germination times and temperatures (each batch was kilned at 165 F)... http://www.mbaa.com/TechQuarterly/pdfs/TQ-45-1-0073.pdf It concludes that optimal malting occurred with a 5...

    Quinoa Pale Ale

I followed a very similar process of malting and mashing with 100% quinoa. I used rice hulls and still had a huge problem with stuck mash. I ended up just pouring though grain bag. Any info on how you went about the mash/sparge would be helpful.

    Fermentation chamber from mini-fridge

Thanks for the advice. I will check out all suggestions for heat lamps and controllers. The reason I like the mini-fridge conversion is to save space. I could fit it under my work bench.

    Fermenation chamber from a mini-fridge?

I am considering building something like this for a fermentation chamber… https://www.homebrewtalk.com/f51/4-6-cu-ft-fridge-10-1-cu-ft-fermentation-chamber-conversion-88554/ The chamber will be in my garage that gets down below 30 deg in winter and above 90 degrees in summer. I would like...
