A question about making wort to use for starter

I do brew in a basket with recirc. After mashing and having collected all the wort for the batch I slowly pour a gallon of hot water from the tap over the grain in the basket. What i collect is right around 1.03 then I put it in the freezer untill I need to make a starter. I thaw it boil it and...

Best tubing size to use with CFC

Even at 1.1 gpm I still get good results from whirlpool. I generally whirlpool for at least 1/2 hr and I get a cone of trub and hops in the middle of the kettle.

Best tubing size to use with CFC

3/8" soft copper tubing is .311" ID. That is the size copper I used in the CFC that i made. I use 1/2" silicone tubing between pump and CFC 3.5' and 4' between CFC and whirlpool arm. The flow will be reduced by forcing it through smaller tube. My pump measured out at 1.1 gpm after 21' CFC and...

    GOOD on Netflix STREAMING?

Trailer Park Boys Season 12. Brewing is the underlying story of the season. Green Bastard and Freedom 35 are the 2 beers they make and Freedom 35 is noted as being the smoothest beer ever.

    Silicone tubing problems..

Mine have a lot more miles on them than yours and don't look anywhere near as bad. I run PBW through them and rinse with clear water. I do not use Starsan solution on mine though.

    Is Beer Smith worth it?

I like Beersmith for designing recipes and storing them and as a guide while brewing. I have the phone app as well that I use while preparing ingredients for brewing and adding them at the right time (has a built in timer) while brewing. I have had it for about 2 years and it has taken me a...

Brew in a basket recirculation techniques

Here is a picture of the evolution of my wort injector design. The one on the far left is the newest and has been consistently over 80% conversion. It has 49 holes 22-1/16" holes and 27-5/64" holes. The series of holes are placed 3/4" apart and arranged so they spray every 30 degrees, this works...

2276 I keep forgetting to let the hydrometer slide to the bottom rather than drop it in the test cylinder. Fortunately I had a spare that I replaced with the on I broke.

Is Maris Otter from Austin Homebrew good?

I can buy it from my LHBS for $1.49 per lb. I bought 55 lbs of MO on a trip to Canada and paid about $50 after exchange. What makes it expensive is that we are conditioned to overpay for its magical properties. I didn't notice brands on any other grains on their site.

    Hydrometer vs Refractometer

I like the refractometer for checking the gravity of the wort after mashing while hot. Hydrometer is most accurate through the whole process though.

Survey: How much money does all grain save vs. mini mash kits.

I checked my last few (all Grain)batches and they came in at around $30 and contained 6 to 8 oz of hops. When I did extract I usually spent $20 just on LME or DME. Spending less on malts allow you to spend more on other things. You may not save a lot but you can expand your horizons.

    Soldering Stainless steel

I have found that prolonged soaking in PBW (24 hrs or more) caused some oxidation to form on silver solder joints.
