    New Hop Yard

We have two rows with two varieties sharing a row. We are hoping to find out what grows best in the soil here and then add rows that only have one variety of hops on them.

    New Hop Yard

I am from Minneapolis but we did this on my friends farm not to far from Marshall Minnesota.

    New Hop Yard

The posts were originally 22 feet tall and we then put about four feet in the ground. Therefore, the cable is about 17-18 feet above the ground. We used a farely large metal fencing stakes on each end at an angel. Also, we used a 5/16th inch metal cable instead of rope. We are trying to make...

    New Hop Yard

This is the Hop Yard that my Buddy and I planted just this past weekend in Southwest Minnesota. We planted 4 different varieties. 10 Cascade, 10 Centennial, 10 Chinhook and 10 Willamette. I can't wait to see how these turn out. Hopefully these turn out well and then we will plant a few more...

    slow chilling

Hmm... I dont think that just an ounce of cascades at 1 minute will will make that big of a difference in the bitterness but I don't doubt that can slightly add to the bitterness of the beer. Also, you might want to think about what type of bitterness that you are tasting. Is it a bitterness...

    slow chilling

What was the timing of your hop additions? It could be possible if you had a large amount of late hop additions that were supposed to be used for aroma and flavor but instead were accidentally used as bittering hops since the wort was able to maintain a high tempeture for a long period of time.

    Using dry yeast

Like unionrdr said, as long as you areated the wort well your beer will turn on just fine.

    unpopular categories for competitions

As long as everyone is bringing their best then I have no problem with people entering the underrepresented style. Also, this has been a great discussion I have really enjoyed everyones input.

    unpopular categories for competitions

I believe that it would be very unfortunate if a person would use this information soley for placing in a competition. I think that we have alot more to learn from embrassing competition rather than running away from it.

    Can't get a "pipeline" started.

+1 to buying another fermentor or two. Also stop giving your beer away like its candy on halloween for awhile.

I have always used liquid yeast, the last 2 batches US-05

I get exactly the opposite results with WY1056. I absolutely think that it is a great yeast. Do you get the propagator or activator packs?

First batch of beer, slight off taste if not ice cold?

What temperature did you ferment at? It sounds like you could have fermented at too warm of a temperature. Give the beer some time and it should improve a bit as it ages.

How many kegs in a fridge?

Touche... I will have to make the bottom flat and cut the shelves out of the door. I just started kegging my beer only a few weeks ago. Best thing since sliced bread.

How many kegs in a fridge?

Could you please post a picture of this? I can only manage to fit two kegs in a standard fridge.

    No more MillerCoors for Minnesota

The state shut down is not only affecting MillerCoors but also local craft breweries. For example, Steel Toe Brewing is ready to start brewing but can't until they get their boiler inspected by the state.
