The Road to Becoming a BJCP Judge

Perhaps dumb and late question but here it is: When taking the BJCP tasting exam, you cannot refer to the style guidelines? If you cannot, what is the logic behind this? When judging a comp, the judges can refer to the style guidelines, correct?

    Hey Sleep Apnea folks!

I'll chime in here. I agree with the other posters that StarSan is overkill. Patients are often worried about their CPAP "getting them sick". They seem to worry that they can get colds, etc. when germs "infect the tubing". This never happens. If the tubing/humidifier chamber were...

    2015 Hop Harvest Totals

Damn. Someone likes Pales/IPAs a lot. Are you the leader for single grower highest total?

    2015 Hop Harvest Totals

Since I've had so many problems getting cones worth a damn (see my other threads here), I was picky and only harvested cones that were of a decent size or had no visible flaws. Hence, a little less than last year but since the bastards are such a PITY to harvest (alone) I was glad to make...

Chicago/Upper Midwest growers-have you harvested yet?

Thanks for everyone's input. I started harvesting mine this weekend, since the collective wisdom told me to do so. If they turn out to be crappy (again), I'll know something else is to blame. Thanks again!

Chicago/Upper Midwest growers-have you harvested yet?

I have zero confidence in my ability to gauge when my hops are ready, after three years of bad or, at best, lackluster quality hops. Last year I got almost two pounds of dry Centennial and Cascade, but for either bittering or dry hopping, they had little bittering quality or flavor addition...

WTB a 6 gallon glass carboy

There's a homebrew shop in downtown St. Charles. They might have what you're looking for.

    Adventures in new fatherhood

These? These are two little kiddos engaged in sensory play. Other than that whole "the medium is 150F" bull****, occupational therapists will laud this as an educational modality.

More than on occasion. I never thought homebrewing would be a way to give her that. But I'm happy to oblige.

    Adventures in new fatherhood

I remember, before I had kids, a friend telling me that he was extract stovetop brewing with his kid in a Moby or Ergo or something. I thought to myself, "Damn, that's irresponsible. That kid could get hurt." Two years later, I was doing the same thing, with the kid strapped to me, but 10...

    Hey Sleep Apnea folks!

I have one patient who is homeless and lives out of his van, and this is exactly what he does. The newer devices draw about 80W. I know this because the inverters that come with the devices have a big "80 W" stamped on them.

    Hey Sleep Apnea folks!

Ok. I'm an actual, real life sleep doctor, and this thread got unexpectedly heated. Wow. Anyway, I'm seeing a lot of posters state they're not that overweight, they still have it, and they're baffled. This is because it's not really the BMI. It's the neck circumference (size). The bigger the...

I stopped by the LHBS, wanted to buy some yeast

I read this and thought, "This must be Brew and Grow." Sure enough, I look to the sidebar and you (also) live in Chicago. They were pushing some new local yeast, right? I got the same thing, but much less condescending. I thought they got rid of those guys when they were still in that weird...

    2014 HBT Hop Harvest Totals

44 oz. split pretty evenly between Centennial and Cascade, 3rd year bines, 2 of each variety. 245.8 +44=289.8 as the running total

Chicago/Upper Midwest: whose close to harvesting?

Thanks for the replies, they were helpful. I harvested over 4 days and have at least 2 lbs. of dried flowers. I just hope they're of even mediocre quality for all that work; I was averaging 6 ounces of dried hops per hour. If they're good quality, it's totally worth it. I'm also on some...

Chicago/Upper Midwest: whose close to harvesting?

I'm in Chicago, and I think my four vines (two Cascade, two Centennial) may be ready for harvest. But, this is my third year with these vines, and I've yet to get anything usable or worthwhile off of them. I won't bore you with the details. So, I'm looking to take cues from other nearby...

    GVH Drying Method

This is a great thread so far; I love the skeptical, scientific approach. One question: you emphasize opening a window to get fresh air in to whatever room we are using to dry our hops. But, say I'm drying in a basement where I have a dehumidifier running 24/7 directly adjacent to the hops...

borosilicate flask on a gas stove: any bad stories?

Bah. I have one of the same Karter Amazon flasks (3L). It's crashing a starter right now, but I'll examine it for flaws once it's empty and clean. I think (stress on think) that most borosilicate glass should be able to handle boiling liquid to ice bath pretty well. It's direct heating that...

borosilicate flask on a gas stove: any bad stories?

Hmmmmm, I was unaware of the "student grade" classification (although I shouldn't be surprised, given the amount of glassware my students broke when I was a TA). Any way to tell from looking at the flask itself? Any brands you know of that don't sell student grade glassware?
