    erlenmeyer flask

An erlenmeyer flask describes the shape of the flask, not the material it is made of. The lab grade flasks made of pyrex or some other equivalent can be directly heated (flame or elec) without risk of breaking. The flask could have also been compromised prior to heating as well during routine...

    Yeast starters

From the Wyeast website... 4. Does the cell count increase when the package is activated? The cell count does not increase significantly when the package is activated.. The smack-pack is not designed to dramatically increase the cell count, it simply “activates” the yeast metabolism.

Read the directions on the pack... I believe that it should be around 4 hours

    alpha acids

From what I understand... Weight x %AA = Weight x %AA In your case that would be: Weight X 6.5%AA = Weight x 10.4%AA This essentially boils down to 6.5/10.4=0.625 or 5/8 of the called for weight. If the recipe calls for 1oz of 6.5%AA hop, the you would use 5/8oz of 10.4%% hops. Here is a IBU...

    Re-use twist off caps?

No offence, but if your concerned with recycling used bottle caps then I can't imangine what kind of anguish you must be under going through your daily activities. I'm all about recycling and being 'green'. I'm an environmental engineer and can honestly say that recycling bottle caps should be...

    Re-use twist off caps?

The best way to obtain bottles when first starting out is to buy the beer with the pop offs. The cheapest is probably sam adams, but it wouldn't hurt to get some good craft beers and understand the different styles, figure out what you like and dislike, ect... Sure $8-12 is kind of steep for a 6...

    Cold crash, air lock sucking

It may be true that CO2 is roughly 1.5x the density of air (wikipedia), but it does diffuse from high concentration to low concentration. Therefore the oxygen in the air (20%/V)will get to the beer. However, the change in volume do the temperature change is pretty small so there isn't much air &...

    Cold crash, air lock sucking

So I'm not understanding the whole suck-up tube idea. I understand how it works, but when you pull the tube out of the container to let the water out, the same volume of air enters the tube and carboy.

    Cold crash, air lock sucking

Maybe its just me, but creating a vacuum with a solid bung on in a large glass carboy does not seem like a good idea. Especially if your cold crashing more than 3 deg. The beer should be fine in terms of risk of infection if its covered, and oxidation should be minimal (the change in volume...

Just did the Keweenaw Brewing Co tour

I don't know where they get their water from...South Range is where the brewery is so I would assume from there. I was going to ask the brew master next time I catch him in the tap room. Didn't they go over that in the brewery tour?

Just did the Keweenaw Brewing Co tour

I love the KBC... They help turn me turn from the dark side of commercial flavorless beer. Great atmosphere in their tap room. IMO the beer is good would consider most of their beers to be 'safe' and not too bold or extreme like some of the other craft brews out there. My favorite is the Red...

    avoid krausen when bottling/racking

+1 I rack into the clarifier/conditioner after the primary fermentation slows or nearly stops, usually a week later. At this point in time there should be no krausen at the top of the beer, only sediment at the bottom.

How many pounds of CO2 in a 10-pound CO2 tank?

Finding a welding supply shop is the best bet. Where I go its about $1.50/lb with tax and I get to keep my own tank.

Good corny deal? or different kegs...

My bad... then yeah that looks like a good deal. Shipping doesn't look bad either.

Good corny deal? or different kegs...

You can get better deals else where... $30/corny is the going price at midwest and other suppliers.

    Hello from Houghton, MI

Hey I'm up in Houghton now, grad student at Tech... Where do you get your supplies? I'm looking at getting into AG but the Keweenaw Co-Op only has a few pounds of specialty grains.
