    How to read this?

Thanks for your reply. I'm not 100% sure of the temperature but i had just pulled it from the mash tun which was at ~62ºC when it finished. I usually correct for temperature pre-boil (as this measurement doesn't really matter, it's just to make sure I'm reasonably on target), but I only know...

    How to read this?

Hi! I'm brewing up my first batch in Europe as I type - it took me a while to get all the equipment together, but i've got it and it's finally brewday! I picked up a hydrometer at the (relatively) lhbs, pulled it out today and found this. I'm brewing an ordinary bitter , nothing too...

    Toothache Plant?

Thanks for your reply! That's the real name, or at least the common name. here's a link: http://rareseeds.com/toothache-plant.html I've chewed a leaf and made a tea out of it. the chewing is much stronger, the tea gave a bit of the numbing effect and some of the saliva production, but not...

    Toothache Plant?

Has anyone seen these or used them to brew with? when you chew the leaves there's a short but intense increase in saliva production and a hot numbing effect on your tongue and gums.

    sweet potato mash experiment

After I read a little more about this, I found several different research papers that puts the gelatinization point of starch in sweet potatoes between 58-80C. I've got ~3Kg of sweet potatoes baking in my oven at the moment at 150C for 2 Hours. After that I'll shred/mash them and mash at 67C.

Stop me before I do something stupid.

Try hopville's beer calculus @ www.beercalculus.com. I've been using it for about six months and it's very helpful. Plus it's free! :D

    Steam cider?

Perhaps this is a disastrous idea. I've looked all over the net but can't find any information...has anyone ever heard of steam style cider? I really don't know much about steam beer (except that anchor steam makes some damn tasty beer) - what it contributes to the flavor, how it changes things...

Ah Nuts! (using nuts in brewing)

    Can beer ferment too fast?

I was wondering the same, actually...I just brewed a wheat beer (http://hopville.com/recipe/352136/home-brew/winter-wheat) and same story...from 1.051 > 1.011 in 48 hours...and that's at 23C! I've fermented hotter and had lag times as long as that before. No idea what's happening!
