    2011 Hop Garden Picture Thread

Question: I have two Mt. Hood hop plants in their second year. The first year they were planted a little late and didn't have a harvest but did relatively well. Plus I live in NE. This year, one of them is doing awesome, with about 20 sprouts (tallest is about 1 foot tall now). The other is...

    Creative Potting

Alright. Yeah, I want to make it look good, first, for the wife. It's going to go in our front yard and I'm going to run the plant horizontal along a picket fence, I think. Not ideal for growth, but the sun is better there. It needs to be somewhat ornamental there. I already have 2...

    Creative Potting

Thanks, that's good to know. I was hoping to be able to move them easily. I guess I should decide if I really need to.

    Creative Potting

I want to plant 2 more hop plants this year to go in a pot indefinitely. Questions: 1) Any creative ideas for a cheap, good looking, good drainage, large potting vessel? I was thinking a whiskey barrel or an old wheelbarrow. Pictures of your creative potting would be appreciated...

    2011 Hop Garden Picture Thread

I second that. I planted mine last year late May up here in New England. I didn't get a harvest, but I'm glade I got them in the ground so they could establish a root system for this year. They are sprouting nicely now, looking strong. I might plant some others this May too if I can't...

    2010 Hops Gardens

I'm a newbie as well, but many people on this forum have suggested that once the bines grow above and beyond your structure, you pull the top of the bine down and retrain it back up your structure. Another option, which may require some structure modifications is to design your twine system...

    2010 Hops Gardens

I planted mine 3 weeks ago. I have pictures from the second week on this thread, post #231. I'm new to this as well, but from how mine are doing, I'd guess you have a good shot at getting them going this season. Worth a shot, IMO.

You did prime during bottling though, right?

    First brew flat!

Some monk breweries do 1 week initial bottle conditioning above 75 degrees F for carbonation. I have had trouble in the winter finding a warm place for mine. So I often give my beers a nice warm-to-hot water bath for an hour or so after bottling to help jump start carbonation. Try not to get...

How long should it take to have growth??

Mine had active shoots and they both took around 1.5 weeks.

    Hops + Pergola = Win

Thanks I thought of that. But lack of sun may be a problem there. The front of the house faces west. Might still work.

    Hops + Pergola = Win

Just planted my first year rhizomes a week ago. One on each side. Question: would you consider mine a pergola? an arbor? or both? Previous owner built it. I love it. I would like a larger one in the back yard if these do well :)

/HBT, Grow other herbs for your beer? Anything worth while to grow, particularly in New England climate? Do you grow Gruit beer herbs? Or others with interesting effects, but legal? :ban Here's my resources so far...
