Recipe came out just a little thin

I brewed a Pale Ale from a recipe I created. It tastes great. Amazing hop flavor. Good head retention and lacing. But it seem just a little thin. I need a bit more body. Grain Bill 7# Maris Otter 2# Aromatic Malt 1# Munich Malt 1# Gambrinus Honey Malt 1# Crystal 80 Mash at 156* 50 minutes...

    Agar agar vs Knox gelatin

Will agar clear finished beer as well as Knox gelatin? I have 4 packets of agar agar but no gelatin.

    Plate chiller and cold break

Started using a plate chiller a couple of batches ago. It works great. 190 after hop stand straight to 65. My question concerns cold break. Should I recirculate back to the kettle til the whole batch is cool or straight to the fermentor? Will I get a good cold break in the carboy or the kettle?

    French press

High Hops Brewing Company in Windsor CO infuses hops in to their pale ale with a French press at serving. I got to try that.

    Gold Medal Pale Ale

My favorite Pale Ale won gold at the GABF. Odell's 5 Barrel Pale Ale won for British style pale ale. Good stuff. Congrats to Doug O'Dell and my friend Jake. Head brewer and former brew master.

    Heat wave!

Seems like every time I order yeast we end up with temps over 100*. Happened again. I ordered a few things from Northern Brewer on Friday. Including a Wyeast smack pack of 1056. It was delivered yesterday and sat on my porch for a couple of hours in the sun and 101*. Ice pack was long...

    Crazy bottling question

A year ago I bottled a Spiced Pumpkin Ale in 1 litre swing top bottles. This beer has aged really well and tastes awesome. I am considering entering it in a contest but it needs to be in 12 oz bottles. Any ideas how to get from the big bottles to the small ones and not losing carbonation? I...

    My keezer is about finished

Holds three kegs. The tower is insulated. The CO2 tank sits on the right side with the temp controller. I think I am going to put bar top resin on it today.

    My first decoction mash!

Last weekend I brewed NB's Caribou Slobber all grain. I used their ingredients with my own techniques. Plus an extra Wyeast smack pack. First I had a pack of Wyeast 3725 Bier de Garde seasonal yeast that I made slants from. So rather than dump the remainder I added it to the Wyeast 1338...

    Fermentation question.

I brewed my first all grain on Sunday. Everything went great. I even got 78% efficiency! Hit my target OG of 1.046 on the nose. I brewed a simple Pilsner. A "Farmhouse Biere de Table" from Northern Brewer. I used a 2 liter starter of Wyeast 3725 Bier de Garde yeast. I had good...

Noisy stir bar driving SWMBO crazy

I have a 2 liter starter going on my new stir plate. The constant clicking of the stir bar is driving the GF crazy. LOL. Any "quiet" stir bars available? Sent from my iPhone using HB Talk

    Logo is finished!

Josh at Brew Brands Creative did a great job designing my logo. Very reasonable price also. L to R, Strider, Homer, Theo, Meko and Gunny. We lost Meko and Gunny in November. We miss you guys.:(

    Craigslist find?

Found a 200 gallon SS dairy vat. Asking $300. I have no use for something that big but maybe someone does. http://topeka.craigslist.org/for/2132953562.html

    Post fermentation temp control?

Last Sunday I brewed an AHS Blue Moon clone partial grain. I have the carboy in a water bath with frozen water bottles and a t-shirt. I have kept the temp between 62* and 68* for 8 days now. Now that active fermentation is complete is it necessary to continue switching out frozen bottles? I...

    Dead yeast and starter F.G.?

We have had five days of temps over 103*. My order from AHS shipped Monday and arrived on my front porch on Wednesday. It was in the direct sun and 104* for probably 30 minutes or so plus all day in the back of a UPS truck and two day shipping from Texas. The little cold pack was long past...

    Rocky Mt water "harvest"?

I just got home from a three day fly fishing trip in northern Colorado. We fished the Laramie River valley. Incredible place. I "harvested" 5 gallons of water from the West Branch of the Laramie River. A very fast running "river" about 20' across and coming down straight out of the mountains...

    Better beer or easier beer?

I have brewed three extract batches since my sons bought me a basic brew kit for Christmas. I have bought quite a bit of stuff to go with the basic kit. I now am ready to move up a level. My dilemma is whether to spend money on a kegging system or go all grain and full boil. Bottling is a...

    maybe good news

I have a Honey Kolsch extract kit from Northern Brewer in the bottles. This is a recipe that I added fresh lemon and orange zest at flame out and dry hopped with 1oz of Saaz in the secondary. At week three I had a distinct bandaid taste and burp out of two bottles I tried. Well it has now...

    Burping up Bandaids!

I brewed my second batch, a NB Honey Kolsch extract beer. 6 days in the primary. 3 weeks in the secondary and 3 weeks in the bottle so far. 1.046 OG, 1.010 FG. Primary temp between 62* and 68*. I dry hopped an oz of Saaz for the first 5 days in the secondary. I used bottled spring water...
