How bad was your first home brew?

An old Mr Beer kit, need I say more...things have improved a lot since that batch.

    Fermenting Bucket Lid

I've got the most inexpensive suggestion yet. Don't snap the lid down, just set it on top. I've done this for the last 18 batches or so, and not a single problem yet. No more fooling with the stupid airlock either, just not needed at all. I know, kinda radical, but give it some...

    The First Sack!

The area I live in is too small for a full-on LHBS. About the best I can find is this website; www.fiftypoundsack.com

House Yeast Strains?? Do you have any??

I'm narrowing my yeasts to three; 1056, 2112, and S-23. I know, pretty lame....but I've just come to realize over time that big estery / fruity favors in my beers isn't my thing. I'm thinking of repitching these again and again till they mutate and see what they become.

    The First Sack!

I just couldn't stop myself from posting this...I've been brewing 3 years now, 25 batches, a year of all grain. Finally took the plunge and bought that first 55 lb sack of malt. Can't help but think of all the tasty bitters, ESB's, stouts and APA's that are resting in that bag. I'm a...

    Did you break even yet?

I also deer hunt, and ride a street bike, so anytime I'm brewing instead it's making me plenty of money...quit trying to "break even" on this great hobby!

    since switching to all-grain.....

In this issue, I have to put it on the brewer. You do need fresh LME or DME, but otherwise there is no difference. Half my beers are extract and half are AG, but when I'm drinking them I cannot tell the difference (and would have to look in my brewing log to remember). Fermentation temps and...

    Water analysis help

That water looks pretty good to me. Just add some gypsum and your good to go for most anything. My water, like most people's in the Rockies is way hard. Unfortunately, water is a rubix cube of complication to wrap your head around. It takes a lot of reading and re-reading to get it sorted...

    Fermentation

I had the same experience at about batch no. 3, my bucket lid just wasn't sealing. I thought about it, read up on this forum, and decided it was no big deal. Now, for the last six or so batches, I have just rested the lid on the bucket rim. No problems at all, my beer is better with every...

Can someone take a look at my water report, please?

Your report isn't really looking at the minerals and compounds that are important for AG. For your extract brewing, if you can't taste the chlorimine or you don't mind the taste, then it's probably fine. If you want to get rid of that taste, then there are tablets for that. A good water...

Can someone take a look at my water report, please?

How you brew will influence the answer......extract brewing or all grain?

    Question about flaked barley

Thanks guys. I noticed that the flaked barley was 20% of my recipe's gravity points, so I was concerned that it would cause me to miss my OG. But looks like I'm fine.

    Question about flaked barley

I'm doing my first AG dry stout and something occurred to me when I was mashing in...should I have run the flaked barley through my mill with the other grains? I didn't and it's too late now, but what's the answer? Appreciate any more experienced brewer's answer.

    What Beer...

I was in Rome with my wife and got a draft Guinness......my first thought after that first sip was "Hey, this doesn't taste like beer at all". My second thought was "This tastes great!"

Help me be even more cheap!

Thanks to everyone for your ideas, gives me several new ideas to try. I am needing more fermenters to I'll hit the grocery store bakery on the way home tonight. I like the idea of trying to grow some hops. It would be nice if I did know enough other nearby home brewers to bulk purchase grain...

Why do brewers buy Chico yeast?

Talk about seeing something from two different sides! I think it's so plentiful and available that I don't see the need to buy it. And you think it's so plentiful and available that you don't see any reason not to just buy it. Some issues seem to have no simple answer...

Help me be even more cheap!

I love home brewing, because it intersects two of my deepest needs...drinking great beer and being 'thrifty'. I'd like some advice from some of this board's more efficient brewers. Keep in mind, I like to squeeze the nickle until the buffalo craps, so here is a description of my current...

Why do brewers buy Chico yeast?

Where I'm at in western Montana, SNPA is $7 to $8 a six pack....I sympathize with you if it's $12

Why do brewers buy Chico yeast?

I have a question that I hope people will reflect on...Why do brewers buy Chico / WLP001 / US 05 / 1056 yeast from homebrew stores or labs? This has to be one of the most commonly sold yeasts, but you can get the yeast with a (nearly) free sixpack! For almost the exact same cost, a person can...
