    Wyeast smack pack question

I tried my first Wyeast smack pack with a starter and I'm not sure of the results. I tried to locate the inner packet and I thought I gave it several good whacks but was unable to determine if I had actually broken it. I waited maybe 2 hours and saw no swelling. I continued with the starter...

Blonde Ale Centennial Blonde (Simple 4% All Grain, 5 & 10 Gall)

I substituted Carahell for the Caramel 10L. They should be roughly the same color but I'm not exactly sure how the flavor differs.

    Liberty ale Clone

Anyone care to share their recipe of Liberty Ale? I've seen the same questionable recipe floating around but nothing tried and true. An extract version would be appreciated.

    Weyermann LME

Is there any benefit to using Weyermann LME over any other LME? For instance, is there any reason one shouldn't use any other brand wheat LME to replace Weyermann Bavarian Hefeweizen liquid wheat malt extract? Would it be any less of a hefeweizen?

    Ommegang Hennepin Recipe

I'm not sure exactly how fresh my ginger is. I ordered it from breworganic.com a month or two ago. The packaging says for a subtle ginger flavor, use 1/4 to 1 oz. I think I'll lean toward the lesser amount after hearing your feedback.

    Ommegang Hennepin Recipe

So 1 oz. of dried ginger root is definitely too much? Should I try for about 0.5 oz. instead?

Blonde Ale Centennial Blonde (Simple 4% All Grain, 5 & 10 Gall)

BM, I was also wondering about this. Sorry if I missed the answer.

    Hallertauer Hersbrucker question

Thanks for the explanation. That helps clear things up a bit. I've been looking at a handful of lighter, summertime recipes that call for Hallertau. I have Hersbrucker on hand so it's good to know that this would be a decent substitute.

    Schuylkill Kolsch

Does the honey go against the Kolsch style? I think I'd add it late to the boil or at flame out.

    Hallertauer Hersbrucker question

So can I substitute Hersbrucker anytime I see Hallertau?

    Schuylkill Kolsch

I'm curious what you folks think of this recipe. I'm looking to brew my first Kolsch and stumbled upon this. Brewer: 12 String Brewing • Beer: Schuylkill Kolsch Style: Kolsch • Type: Extract w/ grain • Size: 5 gallons SG: 1.054 • FG: 1.010 • Bitterness: 23...

In Praise of Puterbaugh Farms/Hops Direct

My power went out for about 72 hours. I'm not too worried about the hops that were in the freezer during that time. I was away for the weekend so nearly all of my food got tossed. I accidentally threw out a pound of Cascade! It was in the dumpster for about 2 hours in 55 deg. F weather. The...

    Salvaging Old LME

How are these working out for you? I have 6.6 lbs of Northwestern Weizen LME that is nearly 1 year old and I'm trying to decide if I should keep it or toss it.

    Conversion to Partial Mash

Thanks for your reply. Where does the 0.75 factor for LME come from? Are you using 0.60 for DME? The 3 lbs 2.4 oz comes from Northern Brewer - their own brand of LME comes in 3.15 lbs (no idea why) and 6 lbs.

    Conversion to Partial Mash

I'd like to make Northern Brewer's Chinook IPA as a partial mash. I have the extract/steep and all grain recipes from their website but I am new to recipe conversions. BeerSmith has helped me get this far but I thought I'd run it past you helpful folks. Here's all grain: 10 lbs. US 2-Row...

In Praise of Puterbaugh Farms/Hops Direct

I just received my shipment. Each 1 lb package ranged from 2-7 ounces over. Or in other words, I ordered 5 lbs and got 6 lbs.

    Old Speckled Hen.

I brewed the extract and steep version tonight. I made a boneheaded mistake - instead of throwing in the East Kent Goldings at 15 and 5 minutes, I put them in at 30 minutes and 15 minutes. No idea why. Total brain freeze I guess. Not sure what exactly that means for the beer, but I guess...

In Praise of Puterbaugh Farms/Hops Direct

I was thinking about getting the Northern Brewer but I was hoping for the 2009 crop (they're selling only 2008 in pellets). I was planning on making these last a long time and wasn't sure if it was a good idea to buy a pound if it wasn't from the latest harvest.

In Praise of Puterbaugh Farms/Hops Direct

I could use some help on figuring out what to buy. I'd like to narrow my purchase down to 4 different domestic varieties from Puterbaugh Farms, and I lean mostly towards pale ales (American and British), IPAs, and possibly California Common. Willamette, Cascade, Chinook, and U.S. Goldings is...

    Old Speckled Hen.

I guess what I'm trying to say is that the AAU of the 60 minute addition of Northern Brewer is 20.4. Is that high for an English Pale Ale?
