What used to take 35 min. now takes 35 seconds

    My thoughts exactly :drunk:

    Wyeast 3711 French Saison

Well, a few weeks later and its down to 1002. I'm going to xfer to a secondary and wash the yeast (I would just bottle from primary but I don't have enough time to wash yeast and bottle in the same day).

    Wyeast 3711 French Saison

I brewed a 5 gallon batch of 1055 on 7/2/11 and by 7/9/11 it was at 1007. Beersmith predicted 1008 (as did the recipe I used). I've seen a lot of people say "this yeast seldom finishes above 1004." Do you think it's still going? I'm not planning to bottle for at least 2 more weeks, I'm just...

    Wyeast 3711 French Saison

Damn. I guess I need to learn to wash yeast!

    Glass vs Better Bottle

Better Bottles, in my opinion. A good soak in OxyClean Free negates the need to use a carboy brush (I don't even own a brush). There's also this (granted, it's from Better Bottle's website, but they cite research):

    Wyeast 3711 French Saison

Has anyone been reusing yeast long enough to experience any mutations or changes? Also any issues with just repitching on the yeast cake rather than collecting a quart, cleaning the fermenter, then pitching the quart? I have a batch of Hoppy French Saison fermenting that I brewed on...

    Howdy from Texas

Welcome! I'm not sure if there's a homebrewing club in Denton, but the North Texas Homebrewers Association has brewdays once per month and is a great way to talk to some really knowledgeable brewers. http://www.nthba.org/

$8, 10 minute, DIY wooden mash paddle

See? I knew I wasn't the first to do something like this :cross:

$8, 10 minute, DIY wooden mash paddle

I'm sure I'm not the first person to have done this, but I thought I'd share my mash paddle, which I think offers a great bang for the buck, is pretty high quality, is very cheap, and was very easy to make. Yes, you could start with a plain plank of wood and shape your own and have it be...

    PsychoBrew

No personal experience, but I've seen a couple of positive comments over at ProBrewer.

    Yes, please!

    Thinking about quitting brewing.

+1 on going back to partial mash / extract for a few batches. I find that with any hobby I undertake, I will eventually overshoot the threshold of enjoyment toward my drive to perfect what I am doing. Taking a step back to the basics can be cathartic and can help you maybe tweak your process...

AG Equipment Musings / Questions / General Confusion

An update (if anyone was watching this thread): I built a MLT. I got a 10 gal Rubbermaid cooler from Lowes (regularly $50, but I printed out the item from Home Depot's website, which has it for less, and Lowes took another 10% off, so in total it was around $35. The Lowe's version is red...

AG Equipment Musings / Questions / General Confusion

How long ago did you buy your copper? I checked Home Depot earlier this week (never heard of Menards) and they did not have any 50' tubing and I believe 25' of 1/2" was $40. I'll check Lowe's tonight. Even here it's $62...

AG Equipment Musings / Questions / General Confusion

Hmm. With the ice bath, I've been using 20 lbs of ice to get the wort down to about 70...but it does take quite a while (30-45 minutes). Speaking of math, and maybe this is a question for another thread...and I know it's a question that's been beat to death, but I don't think I could build...

Fermentation chamber: window ac vs minifridge

Have you wired a fan in your chamber yet? How would one go about doing that? (the 12v to 110v thing is a mystery to me).

AG Equipment Musings / Questions / General Confusion

Thanks, that's a great idea! Another thing I forgot to mention about using an IC is that my tap water is almost 80* in the summer. I guess I could just get a prechiller (should the tubing diameter be the same as the IC or can the IC have larger tubing?). But I've also been pondering...

AG Equipment Musings / Questions / General Confusion

I’ve been brewing for a couple of years now (starting with extract then moving to partial mash) and am ready to step up to all-grain brewing. Where I’m struggling is on the equipment end and figuring out what all I need in order to make this move. Where I eventually want to end up is with a...

Fermentation chamber: window ac vs minifridge

How come you chose to use a Love controller over a much simpler Johnson/Ranco unit? Was it cheaper? Does it work better? Was it based on appearance? Is it just that you are more used to the Love controllers? I've been trying to figure out which way to go and the only real advantage of the...
