    I have the 1.02 curse...

My past two beers have not finished lower than 1.02...they never taste sweet, but that damned hydrometer won't sink past the 1.02 line. My latest stout was just racked to secondary after a week -- 1.02! My past two beers: Specs Below: American Amber Amount Item...

    Acetylaldehyde?

So I just filled my keggerator with two beers that have been aging in secondary for 6 months (cool, dark, brew room). I waited for them to carb and then eagerly pull a pint of rye cream ale and vanilla porter... ...and taste apples. In both. I've been over everything -- long primary and...

    Draught of the Dead

My last one was, "Call of Cthubrew." So I wanted to keep with a horror/sci-fi/geek culture theme. And so here it is... Shrunk from an 11x17 300 DPI....thus the slight blur. -- tlarham

    Curses!

I finally purchased a set of Perlick faucets and shanks for my kegerator...and with breath bated I've been watching them as they cross the country via UPS. I get home Friday and wave a passing greeting to my family and bolt to the brown package waiting for me on the table -- my priorities...

Could I get some math help?

I'm an English/Theatre teacher...numbers and I have a fundamental communication flaw; if there is anyone for whom the gift of arithmetic is strong, I would be most appreciative of some assistance. Since I started using a heatstick with my boil, I've enjoyed a more vigorous bubble...and...

    Cream Ale -- Which Yeast

Brewing a cream ale this weekend for the first time (recipe below) -- which yeast do you all find works best for this style? I was thinking Wyeast Kolsch for the malt profile. BeerSmith Recipe Printout - http://www.beersmith.com Recipe: Cream Ale Brewer: Tallon J. Larham Asst Brewer...

    Accurate Refrigerator Temp

I just got my birthday present -- a refrigerator from which will be born my kegerator. Got it all cleaned up, but not sure about how to gauge the temp inside the fridge? My thermometer (oven type) reads 25 at the current setting...but a probe in a beer bottle full of water reads 39. So...

    Stupid Mistake...or Don't Worry?

So I went to the LHBS to get my grains for my vanilla porter...and I misspoke when ordering, and didn't realize until after they had ground my grains. I wanted a grain-driven coffee element to go with the vanilla. Here is the grain bill I ordered: Ingredients Amount Item Type % or...

    Corny Cannibal

So I'm cleaning up my brewroom, and getting ready to scrap 3 kegs that are riddled with holes from a shotgun ( I got them that way from the scrapper). I salvaged the posts and gas tubes, 1 dip tube, and cut a 10 inch segment of another dip tube (thermowell?). What else should I do to these...

    Electric Question

So I've only used a 1500w heat stick because I've yet to spring for a couple of 20amp outlets run to my deck for brewing. But recently the thought hit me... ...why not use my Dryer plug? In my basement I have two circuits -- washer and dryer. One is labeled 20amp, and the other is the 220...

    Finally!

I have never escaped the 70% efficiency number...until this past session -- I hit 79% It was a bit of a shocker... What I did differently? Well I've always just done a drain and batch sparge -- initial mash for an hour, drain and then 168 degree water on the bed, stir and wait (10), drain...

    Opinions?

    I've never brewed a porter before...so here's the recipe I just made -- doe sit look alright? Robust Porter 7.25 lb Pale Malt (2 Row) US (2.0 SRM) Grain 70.73 % 1.00 lb Caramel/Crystal Malt - 40L (40.0 SRM) Grain 9.76 % 1.00 lb Victory Malt (25.0 SRM) Grain 9.76 % 0.50 lb Chocolate...

    Yet Another Logo...

Played with my Wacom this evening...decided a logo was a worthy waste of time. ;) Thoughts? I'm only just noticing a few issues with pixels...I knew I should have been working at a higher res. FYI -- Drawing done with a wacom bamboo in inkscape and then colored and assembled in gimp.

    Sanyo Conversion with Pinock Kegs

I have permission to build a keggerator. SWMBO wants me to build a sanyo conversion, when all I asked for was a standard fridge in the garage conversion. So my question: Does the 2 keg capacity of the popular Sanyo apply to pin lock kegs as well? I also have a very large CO2 tank...so my...

    Propane Burner Question

In a nutshell -- do these badboys need replacing after a while? I have a custom keggle burner stand that I got almost ten years ago when I first started brewing. it sat unused for several years and now I'm having some issues with it. 1st, I can't crank it to high. If I turn the regulator to...

    Santa Came Early

About a month ago, I sent out word via facebook to family and friends that I was looking for Corny kegs to start kegging my beer, in case any of them came across some I could nab for cheap. I didn't hold out much luck. A week ago I get a call from a friend who was at a scrap yard where...

How to Brew a Small Batch

I've decided to try brewing up a small batch of barleywine to store away for a year, and to play with a recipe or two. Formulating a recipe doesn't seem a hard task, but I've got some questions about mashing and sparging techniques for small batches. Super simple recipe: 8# Pale 1#Crystal...

    Gelatin in the Secondary

I once brewed a pale ale and decided to try gelatin to clear it. I added the gelatin to the bottling bucket right before bottling. When I cracked open a bottle a month later, the beer came out clear and delicious...except for the putrid-looking gelatinous clumps that had settled to the bottom...
