    Snow Globe Starter

Cool, Thanks. I'm using it for a Stone Ruination Clone. I've just never seen anything like it.

    Snow Globe Starter

I built a starter yesterday with 1L of water, 1 cup of Extra Light DME and a pinch of yeast nutrient. Added two vials of White Labs English Ale Yeast WLP002, and today it looks like a snow globe. I am attaching pics, but it is hard to tell. Is this normal? I have never seen such large clumps...

    2010 Hops Gardens

Planted two Cascade rhizomes last Wednesday. When I returned from a weekend away, I found them already through the soil. Can't wait for some big growth!

    FG 1.02 done?

Take a gravity reading and then take another in a couple of days. This is really the only way to know if fermentation is finished. You won't always see activity in the airlock. Good luck!

From First Stage to Second Stage fermentation

+1 on the don't worry too much about hurting the beer. I've yet to have any problems when using a secondary. The kit I bought came with a siphon, but not an autosiphon. If you do not have an autosiphon, get one, now. Really. Go now.

    Carboy Cleaner

I haven't used it, but I use one of these, and I've always been happy. Plus it's 1/2 the price. http://www.austinhomebrew.com/product_info.php?products_id=2343&osCsid=1e815d174db0a3567dd52b016d413a30

    First batch blunders...some advice needed

I usually do a min of 2 in primary, and 2 in secondary, and in keg long enough to carb. Once it's in the keg it's too hard to resist. :) Also, check out fermcap to avoid boilovers in the future and +1 to yeast starters.

How can I tell if fermentaiton is stuck?

The only real way to know if the fermentation is stuck is to wait a couple of days and take another gravity reading. Did you make a starter for your yeast?

    Batch #4 a first...

Some Fermcap will make boil-overs a thing of the past... Enjoy the beer!

    56 @ 28, sounds about right...

    Infection - yikes!

I've had this happen in my secondary, and it's gone in a couple of days. Looks like a small fermentation.

    yeast never started, twice

Scott, I'm glad to hear things are finally taking off! Good luck with the beer, and let us know how it turns out!

    yeast never started, twice

What are you fermenting in? I know a couple of people who assumed they weren't fermenting because their airlock wasn't bubbling. Turned out the seal on their fermenter wasn't air tight so they were fermenting, they just couldn't tell. I'd wait a couple more days and take a hydro test. I...

    Racking Apfelwein

I like mine carbonated. Seems to give it more body. Also, I think it develops more body and flavor with time.

    yeast never started, twice

Did you make a starter for the WLP001? Also, the WL website says it ferments best between 68-73. No starter+old vial+cold temps could make for a pretty slow start.

    Airlock question

My standard is the 3 piece with vodka, but I've used plain water and iodophor water in the airlock, too. After having one plugged and expeciencing an exploding primary twice in a day, I now use a blowoff tube on all beers for the first week. I know that's probably a bit much, but I don't like...

    Using a hop bag

I usually only use a hop bag for dry hopping. The hops from the boil usually settle out in the primary/secondary fermenters, so I don't mind them making it that far.

My Stirplate... Cheap and Easy Build...

I don't think it's a length issue. I think the magnet has poles on the top/bottom, not the ends like the stir bar...
