    DIY Motorcycle part taps

I am finally getting around to making some custom tap handle out of old motorcycle parts I have laying around. Thought I would share the connecting rod taps I finished this weekend. I have plans to do some cam shaft taps and a shock or shock spring tap. I hope by sharing it will motivate me...

    Renters Wine rack (planning phase)

Sorta update: I bought the supplies for at least 4 boxes last weekend and built two boxes. I will be updating the OP with cost, design and pictures. Probably won't happen till this weekend. The ones that are done work great, Heavy when full but manageable for me, SWMBO couldn't pick it up. :D

What wine kit or wine for long term ageing?

I am getting married in a couple of weeks and just had a grand idea this morning. I should brew a wine for the wedding… Just kidding. I would like to start a wine in the next month and have it as an anniversary wine each year. So obviously it will need to age very well. Considering...

    Renters Wine rack (planning phase)

I am not worried about the stacking of the wine bottles, I have been storing them stack directly on top of each other for some time. And so do many wine stores. Randar, I agree that there are many to be found but the key to this design is that it doubles as a carrying case without removing...

    Renters Wine rack (planning phase)

I am not sure i follow your math or logic. There are only 8 bottles stacked at 3 lbs each if all the weight was transfered to the bottom bottle (which it is not some is supported by the walls) there would be 21lbs on the bottom bottle.

    Renters Wine rack (planning phase)

My estimate is different. I weighed 2 750ml bottles full last night and both were close to 3 lbs. I was assuming 20 lbs for the wood glue and screws for the crates (just my shoot from the hip estimate). So i am thinking of about 92lbs per crate full. I am a decent size guy, don't plan on...

    Renters Wine rack (planning phase)

Couldn't find the plans you spoke of but have revised my plans after some thought. Boxes are now 18x18x14. The new design is much easier to assemble and disassemble and add boxes. Which is one of the big things that the original was missing. The dividers will help with keeping like kinds...

    Renters Wine rack (planning phase)

I will be bottling 3- 5gal batches of wine in the next month and starting some more batches so it is time for a wine rack. I just moved, but I am still renting a house so I am planning a wine rack that can be broken down and used to transport the wine the next time I move. After moving 250...

    Bottle-Carbing in #1 PETE

I agree 100%. Use of any product outside its original designed usage can lead to problems. And obviously even though i should know better i throw caution to the wind. As always we are responsible for our own choices.

    Bottle-Carbing in #1 PETE

I have to chime in on this from two sides. 1st Side: I have done it. Works fine. I did my first two batches this way. I used the 1/2 gallon "rectangular" bottles. Bottles did deform as they weren't intended for internal pressure. But worked. I still have 4 bottles that are bottled this way...

    Keggle false bottom collapse!

Remember a gallon for water weighs approx. 8 lbs. I don't think a "vacuum" was pulled but what i think happened was your pump was pumping wort quicker than it was drain through the false bottom. So now the false bottom is supporting all the weight of water and grain. When you slowed down...

Oatmeal Stout recipe - Critique - my first recipe

To start and close the loop on this oatmeal stout recipe I have my notes from this weekend’s first bottle. I will try and remember to update again in a month or so. The stout started very clean with a slightly “full” mouth feel and that Oat smoothness/silkiness that I was looking for. The...

Storing Washed Yeast - How Small A Jar?

+1 on 4 oz jelly jars, I paid $8 (I think) for a flat of 12. Work great, I use a 1 gallon jug to wash, then a 1/2 gallon jug for a 24 hr cold crash to get the yeast out, you can get a lot of yeast in the jars if you decant most of the beer/liquid off before re-suspending and transferring to the...

Oatmeal Stout recipe - Critique - my first recipe

Update: I needed the Primary so this went in the secondary on 1/22/10. (I didn’t update because I took no hydro sample or taste) So it spent 21 days in the Primary. Then into a 5 gallon Glass carboy that was tiptop full. I gave it 11 days in the secondary then a slight cold crash and...
