All grain thermometers and sight tubes

I have 2 pots made from kegs and I have installed a valve in each of them. My question is do I need thermometers and sight tubes in both of them?

    Dry hopping while carbing

We just put an ESB in the keg to chill before carbing. SWMBO saw a quarter ounce of cluster hops in the fridge so we put it in a hop ball and into the keg. Will this have much of an effect on the beer?

    "Dark beer"

When I do my missionary work for drinking good beer one response I get a lot is "I don't like dark beer." My response is to say that there is really no such thing as "dark beer", there are beers that are dark in color but there is no category as "dark beer". Am I correct? I know that stouts...

    Grain bag squeezing

One of LHBSs in Denver, in the instructions in an extract kit advises me not to squeeze the grain bag after steeping the grains, (they do advise letting the bag drip). Me, I always squeeze the excess liquid out of the grain bag. I was wondering what is wrong with squeezing the grain bag.

Stupid ??? re: stuck fermenting bucket lid

I know, this is stupid, but, I put the lid on too well last Sunday, and now I can't get it off. Is it OK to just wail on it with a hammer & screw driver? I thought I saw a lid opening tool somewhere but I can't seem to find it. Yours in stupdity, Eddie

    Still not carbing in keg

Tomorrow will be 2 weeks since kegging (my first time). I had the CO2 on 15 psi for a week with no progress so I turned it up to 20 psi last Sunday, still only a little foam (1/8 of an inch) and not much carbonation. Is it OK to do the fast carbonation thing (you know 50 psi and rolling and...

    First time kegging

I've searched but can only find stuff about cleaning kegs and gas etc. After it is kegged I plan on doing a forced carb and have all the info I need for that and the Chris Knight stuff (kudos on that) gives me much info on cleaning etc. What I am wondering about is how long in primary...

Do I need a wort chiller?

I live in Colorado, at about 8,700 feet where it is usually about 10 degrees cooler than say Denver. Right now I just stick the covered wort in the carboy outside and it cools pretty quick. When summer comes, will I neeed a a wort chiller? The summer nights are cool but I wouldn't call it...

    Bottles breaking

What is causing some of my bottles to break when opening them. I've had this happen to me three times now, thats 36 ozs of good home brew. Yoicks!! The beer is good, it is carbonated, everything appears to be normal. It was 3 weeks in primary, then 3 weeks carbing up in bottles, Like...

    One more question

And probably a dumb one at that. Almost all the hydrometer readings I see talk about a reading of say 1.044 - 1.048. Mine hydrometer does not seem to be calibrated that way. Mine reads, at the top, .990. Then it goes to 1.000, under that it is calibrated every 2/10ths and these are...

    A few noobie questions

    1) My house has a septic tank. Does anyone know if, when I clean my carboy after racking after primary fermentation, the yeasts and stuff will have any bad reactions to my septic tank or will it have any effect at all? 2) I like the idea of someday coming up with some artwork for labels for...

    Auto siphon

I bought an autosiphon and it works great. I've only used it once, to siphon from the bucket into the carboy after pouring the wort into the bucket and into the 1 1/2 gallons of cold water. I do have one concern. When siphoning from the bucket to the carboy I had to leave the lid off of the...

    New brew in Colorado

Hello all from Conifer, CO. I am working on my 4th batch. The first two were Mr Beer then in September I noticed some beer making equipment at a friends house, we got to talking and she asked if wanted the equipment, ahh yep! BTW, I was wondering, I live not too far from Golden, CO and...

    Krausen

Hello, I am making a second attempt at brewing my first batch w/o a Mr. Beer kit. Things seem to be going good so far as long as I am correct about 1 thing. You guessed it - krausen. This batch has a good head of white foam and is quite active, there is also a greenish/brownish looking foam...
