Storing yeast starter in fridge for a week - good idea?

I have a lager yeast that I got rolling with a yeast starter but now I'm not able to brew for another week or so. Can I just place the yeast starter flask in the fridge for the week (with air lock) and then simply dump it in the fermenter when I brew or should I "re-start" it first?? I'm...

Indoor RIMS/HERMS with natural gas? Safe?

Although I'm a little ways off from buying or building a RIMS or HERMS, I'm starting to learn as much as I can about them. I do not have a garage. I currently brew outside my basement window and pump the wort inside to my fermenter. I would like to brew completely inside. My house is heated...

    First lager...question about diacetyl rest

I'm using the brewheads.com calculator. Brewheads.com - Beer Statistics Alcohol is accounted for. Thanks for the clarification.

    First lager...question about diacetyl rest

Isn't it necessary to condition the beer prior to filtering? I have read that filtering will remove the necessary stuff to allow proper conditioning. That is why I was thinking of filtering after conditioning.

    First lager...question about diacetyl rest

I'm brewing my first lager and so far so good with primary fermentation. According to my refractometer I have gone from 11.4 brix at 75 degrees to 7.1 brix at 50 degrees. So I think I am close to the end of primary fermentation. It has been about 3 weeks. From what I've read I should go...

    No bubbles...why?

Thanks for the reassurance everyone. I think the evidence suggests I am just being impatient. I'm used to seeing obvious signs of fermentation within a day when I brew ales and I just wanted to get experienced opinions before I do take the brew back to the operating room. I will get a...

    No bubbles...why?

I just started my first lager and things are off to a very slow start. I'm brewing a pilsner. I pitched wyeast Czech pilsen yeast (liquid) after rapidly cooling my wort to about 75 degrees. I used pure oxygen to oxygenate the wort prior to pitching the yeast. I then cooled the fermenter down to...

    cloudy beer! argh!

I used liquid wyeast Irish ale. OG was 1.037.

    cloudy beer! argh!

I think you may be right. It does seem like I'm just picking up a lot of sediment. If that's the case then I'll drain off a few pints and see if it clears up. Next time I'm either going to wait longer or rack to secondaries for a little while if I want to use my primary.

    cloudy beer! argh!

I have brewed a malt extract kit Breakfast Stout. It spent about one week in the primary fermenter. At that point I wanted to use the fermenter again so I racked it to corny kegs. I pumped in a little CO2 into the kegs and let it "condition" at about 65 degrees for about 4 more weeks. I have...

    Starting gravity too high?

thanks for the reassurance. I just checked and my refractometer does adjust for temperature automatically.

    Starting gravity too high?

I brewed a malt extract kit (Northern Brewer Breakfast Stout) that stated the original gravity should be 1.030. I took a refractometer Brix index reading of 9.1-9.2 prior to pitching the yeast, which correlates to about spec grav 1.037. Frankly, I'm not that worried, but I was wondering whether...

How do you rack with your Fermenator and CO2?

I am having trouble determing a way to connect my CO2 tank to 1/2" siphon tubing. The shutoff valve on the CO2 tank has a 1/4" MFL end. Will a 5/16" barbed swivel nut attach to 1/2" tubing? Seems to me it would be too small. Is there another adapter that would work? In case you are...

Racking from a fermenator to corny kegs...i got questions

I am brewing a Scottish 60 Ale from a northern brewer malt extract kit. This is the first time I have brewed with my shiny brand new equipment and all is going well so far. It is now day 5 since I started fermentation in my 14.5 gallon Blichmann Fermenator. I have a yeast blowoff assembly that...

Thanks for the advice Bob and everyone else. I will be getting a refrigerator based on your suggestions.

    secondary fermentation with ferminator

Thanks for all the advice, especially regarding temperature control. Next question: Are there other ways to regulate temperature in a fermenator short of a refrigerator? Yes I have already purchased one and really don't regret it. I just want to optimize my brews as much as possible without...

    secondary fermentation with ferminator

I am interested to know whether most people use glass carboys to do secondary fermentation or do they skip it altogether and go straight to kegging. Does the ferminator make secondary fermentation nonessential? Also, does anyone put their 14 gallon therminator in a refrigerator for making...

Some questions about ferminator, therminator, etc

I am bursting back onto the homebrew scene (after 10 year hiatus) with a 10 gallon ferminator and boilermaker and have a few questions about setting everything up... 1) 1/2 or 3/8" tubing? I would prefer 1/2" tubing however I am not sure my thrumometer is compatible. It looks like it...
