    understanding efficiency

Hey guys- I've been all-grain brewing pretty successfully for about a year, but haven't ever really paid attention to efficiency. I would like to dial down my system and start understanding these details better. Could anyone help me? I want to know how to hit my target OG better. The...

    poppet valve

Just tried it again...seems as though it's going to work when it's not quite cranked down and the more I crank the post down, the less the poppit depresses. Wierd...then it is really hard to pop the poppit out of the post. Driving me nutz, cause everything looks fine!?! thanks

    High OG

I only collected 5.5 gallons pre-boil. Last batch I did I collected 7. I like collecting MORE wort, because I had to add a gallon of water to get me back up to 5 1/4 gal pitching vol after boil off. Haven't decided what works better- It's only my 2nd AG. What is the easiest way to calculate...

    High OG

All Grain...so you think I did better at efficiency? I haven't really figured out how to test for that-

    High OG

Hey everyone- just to note...you all have been SO helpful on this forum!!! What does it mean when I get an OG higher than the target? My OG was 8 or so points higher than it should have been. why?? THANKS!!! :mug:

    cloudy wort?

I just did my first All-Grain English Pale Ale. My first runnings were VERY cloudy even after the vourlouft (spelling?). Is this normal, or did something go wrong in the mash? Also, my OG was 10 points higher than my target!!! I'm new at this...I hope my mash worked- I lost some temp along...

    keg storage

Question- This may sound really stupid, but how long does beer last in a keg? Is it just as long as a bottle? Thanks for humoring this novice question-

    carbonation

I just tasted my first AG Porter (OG 1072 FG 1012) and it tastes AWESOME! Except for that it is a bit sweet, and it's pretty flat. I put the normal 3/4 cup of corn sugar, but maybe I needed more since its a pretty big beer? Also, I am tasting it 3 weeks after bottling. I've been told that...

    Secondary Fermentation Quandary

Just bottle it! If it has been in the ferm for a good week, and your FG is where you want it, just bottle it. The bottle is a secondary fermenter too. I actually asked Charlie Papazian himself the same question, and he said just to bottle the thing. good luck!

HELP! I'm totally new to kegging!

Hello! I am completely new to kegging, and want to start. I'm very overwhelmed at the amount of gear needed. I do know however that I want to have a "Draft Box" system for the time being before I get a fridge that I can convert. Can someone maybe lay out what I'm going to need equipment wise...

    I need....

Okay- Here's what you do- go to Wal-Mart and buy a 50$ Turkey Fryer. You've got your burner, and 7.5 gal (30 qt) stock pot. Buy a cooler for 15$ and spend another 20$ on hardware to make your mash tun. There are some good YouTube videos on making a mash/lauter tun...I did it, and I'm NOT...

    Secondary fermentation

Hey all- when I do my secondary fermentation, do I need to keep it at my original fermentation temp, or can I put it in my colder cellar?

    Coldest weather brewed in?

Yea, my first AG day was about 25 F. It was cold, but it worked. The wort sure chilled quickly. I didn't need to use any additional equipment. I DID wrap a blanket around my cooler so it would hold heat better. Make sure you pre-heat your mash tun or cooler, so you loose less heat-

    yeast

So, you think I'd probably be okay with one pack? I may just get another to be careful, but there's no way I'm buying three!
