    Gravity measurements

Hi - quick question on the tools used for gravity measurements - pros / cons i use a triple scale hydrometer. Pro - cheap and easy. Con - fragile, subject to misinterpretation what are the benefits of the other types in use? I’m getting tired of buying one of these every couple months. Seems...

    Hop spider issue

Hi, happy new year. Celebrating the end of this dreadful year with a Belgian quad. always used a hop spider, never any issues even when I made dh60 clone which seemed to have more hops than grain. Today, it’s clogged. Not a lot of hops, 3oz, but it plugged after the first add. thoughts?

    Split mash

I’m looking at some big ris brews, and using a robobrew they are a bit heavy in the grain bill. If I split the mash into two vessels are there any issues I should look out for? I’m thinking to bring it all into one grain bag, mix as best as I can, and then do half on a burner setup that I used...

    Conditioning question

Hi all, hope your christmas brew was amazing - mine was, chocolate English stout with a hint of vanilla and coffee. I'm looking at a couple batches of Russian imperial stout, and it looks like they all need some conditioning, 3-6 months. Oddly enough, I am limited in fermenters, but have an...

    Mash question

This is my second all grain batch, robobrew - have done 8 extract brews, one partial mash that didn’t go quite so well, and one all grain (brown ale, best yet). Us robobrew (120v, 1500a heating) with 3 layers of foil lined bubble insulation. Tried the traditional cooler method, failed...

Adding macadamia (or any I guess) extracts

Hi - had a delicious nut brown the other day that I want to try and make - but it had a distinct macadamia taste to it. Read up a lot on getting that flavor, looks like extracts are the simplest way to go (i.e. I have the patience of a gnat and don’t want to roast them to get the oil out)...

Grainfather / Robobrew question (not asking which is better)

I’m looking into both, just started all grain and found out that I am bad at controlling temperature. Like really bad. I know the more I do it the better I’ll get... Anyhow - both seems pretty comparable in features and quality, as well as process. Questions; and I’m just trying to wrap my...

    Cooler mod question

just finished cutting and installing sparge manifold in a rectangle cooler. As it is now, the hole is about 1” above the bottom. Is this just lost volume that I should be unconcerned with, or do I need to find a spacer?

Taking the next step (or the plunge, depending on how it goes)

So I have 8 brews under my belt (yes, a legend in my mind), 3 from extract kits, 4 from extract recipes, and one was a mini mash because I couldnt’ find the right extracts, prodded and guided by Islandlizard (many thanks, membership incoming, can’t justify not donating after all the help I get...

    Transferring into kegs

just kegged my first time yesterday, some spillage, but overall a boatload easier and faster than bottling. One dilemma (possibly only in my mind). When I stick the siphon thing in, it sucks up some of the goo (trub?) at the bottom of the fermenter. Not a real issue to me when going to the...

    Pellet hops question

i have several partially used packets of hops resealed (with tape) and in the freezer. Is this an adequate way to store or am I just wasting my freezer space?

    Purging a corny keg

Doing my first kegging expedition today - air and new taps all set up, ready to go. After I fill the keg, I know I will need to purge the air, how is this done? The CO2 goes into the short tube side, definitely don’t want to purge from the other side, so do I connect the CO2, disconnect and...

2 batches at once, twice the questions

brew day yesterday, brewed a Belgian and a kolsch, fun, needed a little more organization than with one batch to keep track. Also, first mini-mash. That was inside, wife didn’t dig it. But she likes the beer, so... Ok, some questions Kolsch turned out to be pretty dark, more like a light...

    No cane sugar

brew store didn’t have cane sugar I needed for a Belgian recipe (needed 1.3lb), so after a bit of talking we settled on 1lb corn sugar. Any major impact? Also, it’s an extract recipe, but there was no Munich DME (no LME either), so I got some Munich grains to partial mash (now that I sorta...

    Ipa question

brewed a dogfish Head 60min ipa a couple weeks ago. Was pretty hoppy after fermenting. Bottled it 3weeks go, opened one to test, and very light hop flavor. Normal, or do I need to evaluate my skills?

Conversion from all grain to extract

Is there a simple (or even complicated I guess) method of converting from an all grain recipe to extract? I see a lot of recipes that I would like to try but can only find in all grain or biab, and I’m neither interested (at this time) nor set up for either Thanks Dave’s

    Serving / kegging question

i see a few cooling plates around here, and a while back a buddy was a brewer (way back - Navy times) and he legged his brews and used a chill plate to serve. So - after kegging and cooling for a bit, can I pull the kegs out of a cooler and run the tap through a chiller to serve?

    Kegging questions

Hi - still new at brewing (just bottled my 4th and 5th brews and I’m hooked), but not fond of the multitude of bottles around the house (actually, I really don’t care, but my wife has some opinions), so looking at getting into kegging. Questions: When bottling, I use priming sugar, then bottle...

    Bottles

hi, I just received a lode of bottles from someone who hasn’t brewed in a while. Little dusty, no big deal, but crusty residue inside. Only a couple cases, but worth saving, or just dump? If keep, how do I clean them? I soaked in sanitizer for a while, some came out, not sure if just soaking...

    Yuk

just made a Dogfish 90 min ipa from a recipe I found on American home brewers site, extract version. Got good og numbers (082 vs 086), but it seems really dark, and tastes like tree bark. First ipa, -probably should have started with a kit, but that’s in the past... Is this normal, or am I in...
