    Dog **** on Carboy.

Came home from work during lunch today and went down into the basement to check on the secondary fermentation. It seems as though my dog had some issues with his Frontline treatment this morning and he took a horrible **** all over the carboy and the towel on which the carboy sits! None of the...

Hop Pellets vs. The Real Thing

It was from a homebrew supply store in Texas, but I can't recall the name. Any suggestions for good online hombrew supply stores? I recently moved and the nearest store is 3 hours away.

Hop Pellets vs. The Real Thing

I used 2oz. centennial, 2oz. cascade, 1oz. fuggles. Not sure about the freshness of the pellets because they were delivered via the mail and I'm not trying to cause trouble, just stating the facts of my particular experience.

Hop Pellets vs. The Real Thing

For my latest batch of brew (Imperial Pale Ale) I used hop pellets in lieu of the real thing and so far I am disappointed with the results. I've just transferred to the secondary carboy and at this stage the brew lacks the strong hoppy smell and taste that my other brews have had at this point...

    Blowoff Tube/Bucket Question??

I use one inch tube because it fits real snug directly inside the top of the carboy, but I suppose any size will do. I fill the bucket up about halfway...just enough to fully submerge the end of the tubing.

    Blowoff Tube/Bucket Question??

I thought about that, but all I've got is Stoli Gold and it's not going into a bucket unless it's already been through my mouth.

    Blowoff Tube/Bucket Question??

Another quick question (i take and i take, but i never give). I've got a blowoff tube going from the carboy to a bucket with water in it. Usually I would put iodine in the bucket water to keep it clean, but lo-and-behold I'm out of iodine and I'm in the middle of ass nowhere so I can't get more...

    No Fermentation?

i've got a blowoff tube attached and there's no bubbles or any indication of fermentation in the carboy. This is my fourth batch and I've never had it take this long to reach fermentation. Maybe it's an altitude issue (i'm living at 7,700 feet)??? I'll give it a while longer then pitch the new...

    No Fermentation?

It's been about 20 hours in the primary and still no action to speak of. I'm afraid the wort was too warm when i pitched the yeast (I broke the thermometer prior to brewing) and may have killed the yeast. I have an extra vial of liquid yeast at hand...should I just throw it into the carboy? Do I...

    Yeast Activator ?

I've got some liquid yeast (California Ale Yeast) that's past its best before date by six months. It reccomends starting 1-2 pint activator that calls for DME and yeast nutrients. I live in the middle of ass knowhere and don't have access to a brew store. How can I get this yeast up and running...

    Difference in carbonation?

so what's the best way to mix in the priming sugar nice and even without over agitating it? I usually mix in 1/5 of the priming solution per 1 gallon of beer as I siphon it from the carboy into the priming bucket. Should i gently stir it as well?

    Difference in carbonation?

Just wondering what causes some bottles to be overcarbonated and others to be just right. Drank two beers that came from the same exact batch of an IPA. Stored at the same temperature, consumed at the same tempurature and opened within seconds of each other. One spewed forth foam for several...

    Difference in Hops Varieties.

Thanks for the tip...I'll give the hop tea a try. As for IBUs, they mean nothing to me at this point. I've seen this concept mentioned in the books, but haven't encountered it on a practical level yet. Now is the time for me to re-examine the literature.

    Difference in Hops Varieties.

I had a recipe for an IPA that called for 45mins boiling 2oz. centennial hops> 15min. with 1oz. golding hops > and 4mins 1oz. cascade hops. When I got home and started to boil the wort I realized that the folks at the shop had forgotten the centennial hops and it was too late in the evening...

    Out of control foam!!!!!

took the advice with the blowoff tube and the bucket of sanitizer...everything is good again with the Imperial Stout. Thanks for the help.

    Out of control foam!!!!!

I just started fermenting my first batch of brew and all seemed to be going well until day two of the primary fermentation. The foam has made its way up through the airlock and forced the cap off the airlock and began oozing down the sides of the carboy. What can I do to mend this problem or is...
