Hydrometer floating all the way up

It happens to the best of us. I had my saltwater fish tank set up and all the sudden I was losing fish left and right. After going through a ton of money and a bunch of fish I stopped and started tracing things back to the beginning. Ended up some how I grabbed my brewing refractometer and not...

    no air lock bubbles ??

All great advice. next time you don’t see any airlock activity, take a flashlight if using a bucket and put the flashlight against the bucket. the “foam and crud” you stirred back in will be a ring around your bucket. if you see that then you’re making beer.

    Fermentation Temperature Management

It’s been years since I did a Mr. Beer and when I was doing them it was just a white packet with no info on it. 65f ambient temp will be fine. Mr. Beer was fun to get started with and play with recipes. once you start to play with the recipes the first thing you’ll want to do is upgrade your...

    New to Homebrew!!

Welcome along. Sounds like you’re on a good start. I wouldn’t give up on your lager yet. It may not have the ABV you’re looking for. But I bet it’ll still turn out good. Plus it’ll give ya some practice in the lagering process

    Another mediocre beer...getting frustrated

I don’t give it that much time when I keg. But I also give it more time in the fermenter. Usually an extra 5-7 days. I will keg and drink that day. It’s still a little young tasting. But not nearly as bad as when bottling. plus when you bottle you’re getting a new little fermentation from your...

    Another mediocre beer...getting frustrated

If you’re bottling I usually let them condition 4 weeks. Then put one in the fridge and try it. If it’s good then you’re good to go not not wait another week. keep notes on dates and tastes. sounds like that’s what you have planned with conditioning the other 12 longer. Write down how the 3...

Foam in airlock on top of carboy (plastic)

You can just clean it out as needed. Spray with San star, pull airlock and dump, spray with San star and put it back. or just take the lid off your airlock so it doesn’t clog and blow off, and let it foam over until it stops then take off and clean. I’d do option #1. Just keep everything sanitized

    Random Picture Thread

It’s been a tradition that ever since we’ve been together I get the Mrs a Christmas ornament. She looks forward to it every year. And it can’t be something normal from a store. I always have to get something good for her. This year I was torn between the grinch that jcav posted. But I went with...

    Diving in to Homebrewing!

Welcome aboard. Lots of good info and reading here. Glad you made the dive in but as you are already learning it’s a really high dive that you can never seem to get to the bottom of.

    Single stage fermentation?

I used to go to secondary because that’s what all the recipes called for, now unless I’m adding anything for it to sit on... mostly fruits. I just stay in primary for 10-14 days typically and then keg. If time doesn’t allow me to go at 14 I’ve even let it stay in primary longer. I haven’t had...

    Cold crash

When I bottled I never cold crashed only because your yeast will have to warm back up before they start carbing your bottles. Yes they will still if cold but slower. I only cold crash now because I keg. I crash for 48 hours then keg and force carb

7 days ready to drink beer > what you think ?

I should of read your post before I replied. I’m still in shock. I’m used to waiting at least 3 weeks. I ferment 2 weeks, force carb then let sit a week.

Make your own beer, they said. You'll save money, they said.

Just the title alone made me LOL. 🤣 That was the whole reason I started brewing. I figured I would have to save money. Needless to say as much as I’ve spent the last 10-12 years my wife still doesn’t believe me that it’s cheaper to brew.

How does this fermentation look like to more experienced home brewers?

Looks like you’re making beer. :mug:

Outside of homebrewing, what do you guys do?

I too work in construction. Drywall, paint and wallpaper. It runs in my family. Every one on my dads side back to my great-grandfather. Besides brewing witch is top on my list, I also paint in my free time. Mostly airbrushing. When I have the time. Somethings I do I’ll have 40-60 hours into it...

    Poor carbonation

Any time I’ve bottle conditioned I always go at least 4 weeks. 6 is usually better. I figure 4 to carbonate and 2 for conditioning. put a bottle in each week and try it. Keep notes and you’ll see where it works best for you

    Fermentation chamber temperature control

Do you have a temp controller or just a thermometer? if you have the controller Plug your fridge into your controller and set for desired fermentation temp. I used to fill my fermenter up with water and set in the fridge. Set your temp to your desired temp and take a reading from your fermenter...
