    Boil off question

Hi - I am still very new, and so I added too much water during my mash for temperature control and I have roughly .75 excess gallons of water. My plan is to first boil off that .75 gallons, and then proceed with my boil as planned. I have a lot of hops to be added during the boil, so I was...

    Question on airlock (3-piece)

Oh okay perfect, thank you! I used to use the S shape so I thought I was supposed to fill the entire thing. I didn’t have any bubbling until this morning. Thanks so much!

    Question on airlock (3-piece)

So I’m still quite new to this, and I realized I think I only really filled the outer portion of my airlock up to the line, and didn’t fill any water in the center portion. Obviously some water likely trickled in but nowhere near up to the line... I put in the fermenter about 12 hours ago...

    55-60 degree bottling/fermenting?

So I had my first batch about 2 weeks into bottle conditioning, and my second batch almost 2 weeks into its fermentation, and I had to take off for a few days. Both batches were in my basement and while I was gone the house got down to about 55 degrees. Will this have hurt/ruined my batches...

Is 9 lbs DME too much for 5 gal batch?

Hi - my first batch is still fermenting, and I'm already plotting out my second batch. I wanted to try a double IPA, get something up in the 8-9% abv range. I was reading a recipe that appeared to be calling for 9 pounds of DME for a 5 gallon batch. Does that sound right? I'm basically...

Boil Over - Is my batch ruined?

I ran into my second major problem. I didn't confirm my airlocks fit my carboy... and they did not. Or not well. If I wanted to, I could force the bung (I think that's what it's called?) completely through. It wouldn't just fall through but I didn't trust it. So I sanitized a few muslin bags and...

Boil Over - Is my batch ruined?

Luckily I've gained a lot of weight and had a lot of old shirts that don't fit me to use as rags and I was able to clean it up mostly (the pot will need some TLC for sure). Thanks everyone, I was devastated at the idea of it ruining the beer. Been waiting to do this for awhile, don't want to...

Boil Over - Is my batch ruined?

Well, first batch and I of course had a boil over at the start of my wort's boil. About 5 minutes after adding the DME. It wasn't boiling so I moved it to another burner, turned away for 2 minutes and it boiled over. I immediately moved it back to the previous burner so it never really lost...

First batch - a newbie question

Hi, I've been researching home brewing for a little while, but am just finally taking my first plunge today. I have one main question, but I'll also explain what I'm looking to do and please let me know if you see any glaring mistakes in this. My plan is to boil 2.5 gallons of water to make...
