    Hello from Ottawa...

Greetings from Cornwall Ontario, I have ordered supplies and kits from several different brewing supply shops in Canada. So far I have found Everwood Ave Brew Shop (Nova Scotia) to be the most reasonably priced for 1 gallon all grain kits, along with a reasonable flat rate shipping option. I...

    1-Gallon Brewers UNITE!

One of the 1 gallon kit stores I've ordered from built the BIAB method into their instructions, so I've tried that. However I decided to stick with using a large metal strainer at the end of the mash. This one here, placed overtop of a 5 gallon pot...

Wearing a face mask when brewing

As long as you keep your face a reasonable distance from the openings of fermenters, bottling pails. Overthinking can be dangerous to your enjoyment of this hobby.

    1-Gallon Brewers UNITE!

Using the smaller pot size (8 quarts) will allow you to get better control when racking this smaller volume to your fermenter. I get the mini-autosiphon or racking cane set up with the pot sitting on an angle (propped up with the wedge, which could be something like an eraser or piece of small...

    1-Gallon Brewers UNITE!

Racking from the kettle to the one gallon fermenting jug is optional with some of the instructions I've had come with the one gallon kits I've bought. Many of the stores that sell these one gallon all grain kits are trying to market to new brewers who are starting with essentially no equipment...

Beer giving me headaches - help figuring out cause.

The very first all grain batch I ever brewed, about a year and a half ago, gave me a similar reaction. A one gallon recipe kit for Bavarian Weissbier. It was my first time brewing and I just put an airlock on instead of starting out with blow off tube during the initial fermentation phase...

Some bottles carbonated, others not at all

Right now I am drinking a beer that I bottled using a twin handle capper. It is on the flat side. After I broke my hand capper, I upgraded to a bench capper. On the beers that I have bottled since the upgrade, I am getting the impression that consistency of my carbonation has improved. So...

    new brewer

The transfer from primary to secondary vessel would be another opportunity to expose your beer to oxidation, which adversely affects the taste of your beer. Just starting out, it is good to keep things as simple as possible while you focus on introducing yourself to the basic techniques and...

    1-Gallon Brewers UNITE!

On my last 1 gallon batch of IPA, after I had auto-siphoned to the bottling pail and bottled my beers, I decided to dump the remaining trub liquid at the bottom of the carboy into a sanitized mason jar. I closed it up and put it in the fridge overnight. The next day there was a layer of beer...

Some bottles carbonated, others not at all

I think that ideally the priming sugar would reach a homogeneous mixture in the beer in the bottling bucket. It isn't surprising to see that this doesn't always happen, given that the sugar needs to be completely dissolved in order to mix well, something that doesn't automatically happen. I...

Some bottles carbonated, others not at all

It's possible to have some issues with the priming sugar not being adequately dissolved or mixed in the bottling bucket. Especially if using regular white sugar. When I transfer from the carboy to the bottling bucket, I try to move the racking cane around on the bottom of the bucket to...

    1-Gallon Brewers UNITE!

The standard size for 1 gallon jugs is 6. https://www.homebrewery.com/Drilled-Rubber-Stopper-6?search=rubber%20stopper Although I have found that you can also get away with the universal 6.5 I believe it is 3/8" diameter tubing that fits in the drilled hole of the stopper. A different...

    1-Gallon Brewers UNITE!

I think a wort chiller is good to use here if you already have one. It can help you get a clearer beer. And if it is clear enough, you can use an autosiphon without it clogging halfway. I now rather use the mini autosiphon to transfer from the pot to the 1 gallon carboy, then dump the small...

Bottles not completely clean - mold found in some

After drinking a bottle, I rince it thoroughly and then hang it on a bottle tree to dry. At least that way I know my own reused bottles stay relatively clean.

Just brewed my first batch with grains. Messed up?

I found it easier starting out in all grain brewing with a well designed kit that comes with a detailed outline of what is needed for equipment, step by step instructions, water volumes, temperatures etc... so there are no big surprises during the process. Being limited to doing a boil in a 5...

Just brewed my first batch with grains. Messed up?

Not really clear on what your desired batch size is. I am assuming with a 5 gallon brewpot you would be limited to a 2.5-3 gallon range.

    Bottling Day Fiasco

I also broke a hand capper this week while bottling. I tried to hold it together with an elastic around the handles, but soon realized it was not going to work. Luckily there is a supply shop less than 10 minutes away that had a bench capper to help me finish the job without missing a beat...

    OG for 1gal Black IPA

They probably don't include the gravity information because 1 gallon kits tend to be aimed at beginner brewers who only have the most basic equipment required to make that kit. So the goal is to help steer them towards making their very first all grain beer come out tasting at least okay...

Immersion copper wort chiller off flavors?

They do also require some effort to get properly cleaned between boils. It would be good practice to clean your wort chiller during the post boil clean-up phase of your brewing day. Using a good brush and abrasive scrubber to get it cleaned in between the coils.
