    1 gallon jug for starter

Whatever you end up using for the the container, I would stick with the foil or a foam stopper not a rubber stopper/airlock. You want to get lots of oxygen in there since you are trying to grow the yeast

    Minor Beer Ethics Dilemma

I would say bring the APA and a half growler or growler of the big beer. I'm sure everyone would understand why you want to age it, and its not like you're showing up empty handed.

    Noob Questions

Everything Matt said plus, welcome to the hobby! I don't know that everyone would agree with me on this, but the biggest complaint I ever hear when people talk about their extract beers is that it is sweet, cloying, or "extract twang" and one of the best ways to avoid that is using a starter, so...

    Need help for the wifey

To be honest I feel the same as far as beer styles, but I think 50% 2-row, 50% wheat, (say 5-7 lbs ea. for 5 gal) about an oz of a fairly restrained hop like willamette or fuggle at 60 min and 1/2 oz again at 0-5 min should be good, mash a little lower than normal (150?) since you should pick up...

    Need help for the wifey

If she's going to "force it down" why not just do a hop tea? I've never tried adding anything to make hop tea taste better but I'm sure there is a way. Otherwise you could do a wheat beer and add fruit, those seem to be popular with a lot of non beer drinkers.

How to add sugar to fermentation?

I think I would wait a few days for the fermentation to calm down a bit then make a simple syrup with your sugar, just boil enough water to dissolve the sugar in, and add that. I think adding the sugar directly could give you a beer fountain and would not be sanitized.
