Trying to stay classy in Riverside California

That'll work. Just make sure you have enough frozen bottles to swap out 2-3 times a day. When fermentation starts the metabolization will heat your brew up, sometimes 6-8 degrees higher so you gotta be vigilant those few days. If it heats up you'll get off flavors and fusal alcohols that smell...

Trying to stay classy in Riverside California

What he said. You'll want a "swamp cooler" for around here to keep fermentation temperature under control. There are many ways to control temps, but the swamp cooler is pretty inexpensive and easy to maintain. Get a large tub from lowes/hd and do what chelshubby says with the frozen water...

Trying to stay classy in Riverside California

What's up from Riverside? You'll be more than happy with BBMB; they're super helpful with any and all aspects of brewing. Last time I was in there the guy was on the phone talking someone through their brewing dilemma..pretty cool. Anyway, this place has massive amounts of information and...

When to allow temps to rise

At what point do you let your temperature rise during primary? I usually stop cooling (swamp cooler) after the krausen drops and the airlock quiets down. I'm wondering if I'm making an error here. My beers have been fine; I just want to improve, and this is where I'm at with my current batch.

    BIAB vs mash tun

This is basically what I do. I have a small grate that fits perfectly over my pot, and I just lift the bag and set it there to drain. I then ladle sparge water over and through the bag distributing it evenly until I get close to my starting boil volume, then I squeeze. It's a bit warm and can...

    Brewing outside?

With my next batch I think I'm going to set out a cup of uninoculated wort in the sun for an hour to see what's up.

    Brewing outside?

I've had beer in a clear glass skunk in minutes outside here so I've always been super paranoid about light contacting my wort and thereafter the finished brew. It is fermented and kegged while covered and lights on low. This is probably serious overkill (it is) but I'm concerned about losing my...

    Brewing outside?

I thought skunking was caused by UV light exposure. Is this incorrect?

    Brewing outside?

Don't you have to worry about skunking when outside? I need to move operations out of the kitchen, but that's always been one of my biggest fears.

    Greetings from SoCal.

Hello everyone. I've been a lurker on these boards going on two years and finally decided to join. This has definitely been my go to site for any questions I've had since i started brewing. My brewing career started with two extract kits from More Beer after receiving my setup from my wife...
