Project Fedora: The Return of Tex

NOTE: PLUG below. If you aren't an adventure game fan, you should probably go to the next thread now. If there are any adventure game fans out there, the Tex Murphy series has a kickstarter going. If you haven't seen the Tex games before, they are realtime-3D adventure games set in a Sci-fi...

    Washed Yeast Color

Usually when I wash yeast it comes out a creamy near-white. I just washed some wyeast 1882 (Thames Valley 2) and it's a deep tan, with shades of grey. Very odd. Anyone seen this before?

    Copper RIMS Tube

Just about done with my eRIMS build. Just need to do a hydro-test and seal up the insulation! Instead of the usual "Jam the Element in real tight" I took a 1" pipe tap and reamed out the adapter enough that I could screw the element in and use the gasket it came with. A little PVC cap fits...

    Better Bottle Problem

I recently switched to better bottles, and really like them. However, I've got a problem! I have the made-for-better-bottle snap-on blue carry handle, which is advertised as Good to carry the bottle while it's full. However, I have now had a full-of-wort bottle slip out of the handle and...

    alarm circuit?

I would like to wire the alarm output on my PID to control a piezo buzzer. I would like the buzzer to start when the alarm output is closed, and then be able to mute it with a push-button switch. Once muted, it shouldn't re-trigger until the alarm output has opened. Is there some standard IC...

    3-md-hc fix

Ok, I must have over-tightened one of the collared studs on my 3-md-hc, because the threaded bushing that it screws in to on the mounting bracket came loose. I hammered it back in, but now it turns around and around. Any idea the best way to fix this? I'm thinking a little glue or epoxy...

    Multimeter suggestions

I am in the market for a multimeter that will, hopefully, last me for the next few decades. I have some other items that I'm ordering from Digi-Key, so I was looking there... and they have ~100 different hand-held ones. Any suggestions on what to look for?

    Cooler coupling?

Has anyone tried gluing a female CPVC coupling to a cooler, instead of putting a male nipple through the drilled hole? It seems like this might be a better long-term solution, if it's possible to get the glue to affix itself to both surfaces.

    March pump head mounting

Does anyone know if it's possible to slip a small bulkhead (1/8" I'm thinking) between the head and motor of the March-809 pump? Since it's magnetic drive, I was thinking that this /might/ be possible, and would allow me to keep liquid separate from electronics.

    Brew Controller

I'm planning to put together a PID/Pump controller box to help with: - Fermentation heating/cooling - Post-boil cooling - RIMS control (future) I've digested many posts and have come up with my plan (see attached schematic and use-case document). Any suggestions/etc before I get...

    Perlick Tips?

I am considering buying a set of the perlick faucet tips (with the different diameters). I remember seeing them all over the place a year or so ago, but can't find them at the moment. Anyone know someone that carries them these days? Thanks.

    Cleaners

After listening to the BrewStrong - Cleaning podcast, I decided to give PBW a real test (I already use it for my brewing equipment, and have a 5lb tub that will last me for quite a while): My 2 year old metal tea carafe at work has been nigh-permanently stained with tea on the inside, which...

McMaster, oh how we love thee

Just got my latest box from mcMaster: brass full-port QDs silicone crush-resistant tubing nipple, locknuts, o-rigs, ball-valve, etc. for cooler port copper fittings for MLT manifold ball-valves And it takes about 24 hours to get a box from the time I order!

    Machined locknuts??

I thought I remembered a post sometime back of someone who had found an industrial supplier (grainger, mcmaster, etc) of the machined 1/2" NST locknuts. However, I can't find the post with search or browsing, so does anyone else know a supplier for these? I'm going to be building a cooler...

    Unfindable CO2 leak?

I've just started kegging, so please forgive me if this is a newbie question.... I have had my first keg on CO2 (warm) for about 12 days, and it's been in the new fridge on CO2 for about 4 days. The pressure needle on my CO2 cyllinder seemed to be going down rather fast, so I decided to...

    Maxcold 40-qt MLT?

Has anyone drilled a 40-qt Igloo MaxCold cooler for use as a MLT? I'm considering using one, but since it doesn't come drilled I was hoping that someone else who had done it could let me know how much a pain it is. One of my HBC members is driving up to Northwestern Extract in a couple...
