    Worst thing you ever brewed?

Altbeer using a kit x2, dme and steeping grains. That day I learned about scaling recipes which is not always linear. Extremely black and bitter from the specialties. Kept the bottles around for 4 years, came out even nastier.

    Watermelon Hard Cider

When it was fresh it was ok-ish but wouldn't win any prizes. After a few days it started to smell and taste like boiled vegetables so I had to dump it. if you really want to make a good tasting melon cider in the least amount of time I think the best option would be to get hold of some lemonade...

Deep clean of heavily used plate chiller

Ha! I applaud your guts to go full nuclear Leeroy Jenkins on this thing! Hope it did the trick!

Drop in specific gravity from post boil to fermenter?

My (cheap Chinese) refractometer can do ATC from 50-86F, which means if you have it laying around outside on a cold day and do a measurement, then hold it in your hand for a while and take another measurement you are outside the ATC ranges and the measurements might differ. Has bitten me once or...

Drop in specific gravity from post boil to fermenter?

Was there water/star san in the plate chiller and hoses? Did the refractometer itself significantly warm up/cool down between measurements?

    Help a new homebrewer setup!

I'd go all-in-one too if I had to start over. I have a 5G 2-tier Igloo system and a mini-BIAB setup. Loads of time have gone into finetuning and refactoring the 5G which while fun distracts from finetuning recipes/beer itself. Those all in one things are quite popular around here these days, the...

    Hello from Italy

Ciao Carmine! Welcome from The Netherlands! I actually own loads of cool brewing gear from Italy, mainly from Polsinelli, they sell loads of cool stainless stuff. Happy brewing!

    Parents who brew...

Father of 2 here. My wife works long hours so it's hard for me to find the 6-8 hours of guaranteed uninterrupted 'me time' to do a brew. I did about 6 to 8 brews each year before the kids, now down to about 2 I guess. I do a lot of tinkering with my gear though which kind of keeps the hobby going.

Looong Break from Brewing - What to Brew

I hear Brut IPAs is the thing du jour. Been planning on brewing one but can't find the enzymes anywhere.

    What's good in upstate NY?

It has been more than a year since we went and planning on going back next summer! Again we will stay in the Barrie area but this time want to take more time for a USA trip. Thinking of doing a tour of NY state as we wanted to do, or do a lap around Lake Huron and see Michigan (Sault St Marie...

Cold crash suck back from blowoff tube

I use a SS fermenter. I got a few 1/4" NC gas-in posts from Ali E. that neatly fit in the predrilled hole for the airlock bung. What I do is during active fermentation attach a disconnect with a hose in some Star San, when I cold crash I remove the disconnect+hose and slightly pressurize (or...

    Electric/Automated Brewery Dilemma

When going the software route you need to be prepared for stuff (SD card etc) breaking mid-brew and have a plan B. It really sucks having to reinstall all your software while already in the brewing process. This is what put me off CPB.

    My 1st Homebrew

My first beer was a Coopers Draught. At the time I thought it was sublime. It was a nasty acetaldehyde bomb.

    CraftBeerPi - Raspberry Pi Software

Yep, all worked well for a while and then kept crashing every 10 mins until after a reboot the RPi wouldn't come up. I tested the microSD card afterwards which was fine. Wasted another hour trying to get CBP 2 up on Stretch which was a drama. Ended up using CBP 3 on simple mode which actually...

    CraftBeerPi - Raspberry Pi Software

Did a brew using CBP 3 a few weeks ago which went horrible. The PWM module kept crashing CBP ultimately causing the RPi to crap out altogether, forcing me to do an on-the-fly reinstall of Raspbian and CBP which added about 2 hrs to my brewing day. SWMBO was not pleased. I am kind of done using...

BeerSmith 3: Here it comes. Thoughts?

Holy moly, didn't know about BS3 being released or even being in the works. I don't like subscription plans so I'd go for the single-fee option but I need to be able to use it on 3 computers (home desktop, work laptop and brewery laptop) and I'd like for the water building tool to be rock solid...

Can you smell a CO2 leak?

A big whiff of CO2 will knock you off your socks, nothing subtle about that. You’ll know :)
