Need help with making a few "Frankenstein" brews

So, we have built up a nice selection of leftover hops and was hoping to pull the crowd to see if anyone has some good suggestions of Frankenstein beers given the extra hops we have on hand. The list... Hops Weight Estimation Cascade 0.4 oz Cluster 0.33 oz Columbus 2 oz...

    2015 hop harvest pics

I'm in SE Michigan. I wasn't sure what would grow well here and what wouldn't so I picked up 3 of the strands that we used the most during our first year of brewing. At least I got something worth using which is more than I have heard from most first year harvests.

    2015 hop harvest pics

Well, we planted 3 variety (Cascade, Columbus & Willamette) this year and sadly only had a harvest from the Columbus. We lucked out I guess though for it being the first year since 5 out of 6 rhizomes popped up and the we had nearly 1.5 lbs of product (wet) from the Columbus. Here is a brief...

Trying to clean up left over hops, any suggestions?

Thanks for the suggestions! I am kind of leaning toward the idea of splitting it between the 2 brews (that was my original thought) so will run it by the Old Man. Also: The kits we purchase are for 5 gallons and we often bump them up to 5.5 so we buy a little extra at times to make sure...

Trying to clean up left over hops, any suggestions?

My dad & I typically by kits and over time we have built up a decent amount of spare hops laying around. We don't have a whole lot of any given amount but was curious as to if we might be able to make something fun with what we have. 0.6 oz. Cascade 1 oz. Centennial 0.6 oz. Challenger 0.8 oz...

    Extract "Gose" Question

Hey gang, I have been reading that with sour beers it is best to use a separate set of equipment that you keep just for use when making sours but was curious if I would need to using an extract kit that uses non-wild yeasts. The kit...

Soon too be first time grower with a setup question

Thanks for the feedback everyone! I will be going with a separate poles per hops since I have the room. We still want to try and create some sort of "Hops Fence" to create some privacy so came up with a bit taller post with 2 tiers instead of 3, having 3 &1/2 feet between bines. Would that...

Soon too be first time grower with a setup question

Good morning everyone! My dad & I have been brewing for a little of a year now and have done some cool home projects (like nice wood bottle box, multiple wort chillers & stir plates) and we are now looking at growing hops. I have a very flat and open back yard so we will be planting at my...

Making First Hard Cider: Light or Dark Brown Sugar?

Thanks for the information. Here are some responses: -From what I have read people have been saying that there is a hands down better flavor profile with brown sugar compared to honey. I actually have a nice source of local uncut honey because my father-in-law has a small bee farm at his...

Making First Hard Cider: Light or Dark Brown Sugar?

Good morning everyone! Really excited to be making my first cider next week. Going with a 6 gallon batch using local cider that is preservative free and unpasteurized. The recipe I am following from Midwest Homebrewing and Wine making. It suggests using 2lbs of honey or brown sugar for a 5...

Brewing a Maibock today - Any pointers?

Hey gang! Pretty excited to brew my first higher gravity beer today with the AiH Man-o-War Maibock. This is my first time using a liquid yeast and a starter and cannot wait for work to finish (hence why I am on a brew forum). I went with an ale yeast instead of a lager since I want it to be...

    First Brew Complete!

So over the weekend I got to try my first homemade beer and LOVED it! I won't lie, I had some worries since we had a few oddball things occur (rapid fermentation, snow falling in the wort, temps got really cold in the house, did we stir enough to get a good mix of the priming sugar) but those...

Home Made Wort Chiller - Pics (no steps)

Thanks everyone! Always great to hear the support. As for the PVC jig, the nice thing about it is that the PVC was removable so you just pulled which ever you needed to bend the tubing into proper place and then place it back in to hold it there.

Home Made Wort Chiller - Pics (no steps)

So, we had a temperature speed test using our brew pot with 3 gallons of boiling water. This is going from boiling and then submerging the chiller in the boiling water for 7 minutes before starting the water. The timer starts as soon as the cold water is turned on: Boil to 100 deg. F in 2...

Home Made Wort Chiller - Pics (no steps)

The Old Man went ahead and wrapped up the project without me (which is fine since he did most the work anyway) so here is the completed product with a few minor corrections to the info I gave and additional information. Tubing size: 2 - 25' coils of 1/4" O.D. tubing totaling 471 sq in...

Home Made Wort Chiller - Pics (no steps)

Hey gang, my parents purchased me a brewing kit for Christmas (yup, 30 years old and married and my parents still get me KILLER Christmas presents) and it has been a great thing for my Dad and I to bond over. So far we have made a Honey Wheat (which should be ready next week) and a Kolsch...

    Bubble Worries - Small leak?

Hey gang, just bottled my first beer on Saturday (AiH "Goldfinger" Honey Wheat) and had a blast doing it. Of course, my dad and I had to sample the little bit that couldn't make a decent bottle, even flat and warm it tasted pretty good. Have high hopes! Now for my concern, after bottling...

    Brewing with honey question

Good, I will breathe easier now. I figured they knew what they were talking about, they all seemed pretty knowledgeable when we went into the store. And the mash actually had honey malt in it, so hopefully that will help (heard that gives more honey flavor than honey does).

    Brewing with honey question

Hey gang, just received my first brew kit for Christmas and made up a batch of honey wheat from Adventures in Homebrewing. Had a blast doing so but am fearful I might have screwed up the boiling process. Looking at the instructions it stated for me to add the honey at the start of the boil along...
