I dont always use my 5 gallon kettle, but when i do ...

My first kit was a Christmas gift from the kids 10 or 15 years ago. Had a nice 5G stainless steel kettle. I use it to make small, like 2 to 2.5G batches. If I ever do a dunk sparge I might use it. But every Friday after Thanksgiving it does yeoman's work - a big batch of turkey soup! This...

    RIP Mister Hall

    I never heard this before.

Within the past couple of days I heard this from an experienced brewer. "Always aerate your wort when using liquid yeast, but there is no benefit to aeration when using dry yeast." This seems counterintuitive to me, but there may be some science behind it. Anyone know? I admit to not having...

I made the check out to BIAB

Saturday would have been my brother's 72nd birthday. He has been gone 3 years now. He was an avid Bills fan. As am I. Bills fans are donating to Lamar Jackson's favorite charity. I hope they donate to honor him and wish a full recovery, as I do, not to pay for the pick six. My donation is in his...

Cryo .. couldn't pass it up.

Deal at AIH .. 8 one ounce packets of Cryo Columbus for $10. What is that $1.25 per? I have a regular recipe that uses Columbus, so I will surely use them up. I've read about Cryo hops but have yet to brew with them.

Every hot break is a piece of performance art ...

Never to be recreated. Each is unique and each is mesmerizing. If there was a Hot Break Channel, I would subscribe.

    Rest in Peace Pat.

I was saddened to read this morning of the passing of Pat Hollingsdale. Pat, who went by Pistol Patch at "biabrewer", was one of the Aussie originators of single vessel brewing and a tireless coach and mentor to people around the world. Rest in Peace, Pat.

    While in self isolation

I told my wife I would probably brew more during these 2 weeks. I have a few kegs to fill to completely fill the pipeline. She said, "What if you run out of supplies and ingredients?" I laughed so hard I pissed my pants.

    Terminology observation

When I started brewing I never understood why we 'pitch' yeast rather than just add yeast, but what the heck. Grain bill, cold crash, pitch yeast ... Brewers are weird people who use weird terms, but just go with it. Except I never could get past wanting to sing to my yeast. Every time I would...

24 hour rain in South Georgia Saturday and Sunday

Still cool and wet this morning (Mon 12/23). I am thinking of fellow brewers in Australia where the country is on fire and temps exceed 100 degrees (F) in many places. I would send all that rain if I could.

    Freezer deal at Ollies

Not sure where Ollies has stores, but I know GA, NC and SC all have a few. It's a close out and overstock place. Hotpoint 5.1 cu ft freezer for $129. My 2 tap keezer is this size. I could probably squeeze a third tap in, but we also use the space for wine, cider, mead, commercial beers. It is...

    If I understand Amarillo hops..

.. they are both proprietary and popular. So 10.99 a pound might be a deal. http://www.homebrewfinds.com/2019/03/back-in-stock-1-lb-amarillo-pellet-hops-10-99.html

This RO water system intrigued me

Reasonable reviews, under $100, replacement filters $40, 100 GPD, and a 1:1 waste to water ratio. The $95 price may be expired, but being Amazon I bet they run it again...

    Question on closed system transfer

I can't say that I am a LODO brewer, but I am slowly taking oxygen risks out as I can understand how and why. My latest effort is to move fermented beer from 6 gallon Better Bottle to purged keg. I have a paintball tank that I can use to get the gas in, and a small regulator that I can set to...

WL 029 Kolsch for an Alt?

Anybody done it? Thinking of doing a starter with 029 and splitting between a honey Kolsch and an Altbier. Kolsch yeast work well in Alt?

    Grassy taste - any thoughts?

In about 100 batches of home brew I have never had a grassy taste. Until now :( I' m drinking the beer but might dump the final 2 to 3 gallons. I seriously don't know if it was bad luck with hops or something bad in my process. Appreciate any thoughts you all might have. Hops used were...
