    Dme question

Well you don't have to have a certain ratio of DME to grains. The more DME will just give you higher alcohol. I've never used a dark DME tho even in my stouts. I always got the color from the speciality grains. What are you making a oatmeal coffee stout? I would save those tasty amarillo and...

    Beer Smith/Mash In Volumn

Also when I first set up the equipment profile in beer smith I thought that mash tun dead space meant the space above the grist. Lol in a 15 gallon keg that would throw the volumes way off. The dead space is the amount of water under your false bottom. If you use a stainless steel braided hose...

    Beer Smith/Mash In Volumn

I think it is but I don't use a cooler for a mash tun. My mash tun is a keg so I can direct fire to heat it. I know some people preheat their cooler mash tun with hot water. I'm sure others can give better advice on those techniques. Mashing at 154 will give you more body to the beer and...

    Want to start hunting

I started hunting deer when I was 16 and I knew nothing about it. That was 20 years ago now. It took a long time before I started to get it since I didn't really have anyone to show me and my brother how to do it. A guided hunt would be the fastest way to get thru the learning curve. If you have...

    Want to start hunting

The first thing I would do if I was you would be to take a hunter safety class. Some states require it for big game hunting but it's a good thing to do anyways if you are new to hunting.

    Beer Smith/Mash In Volumn

I think the grain absorption variable should be close if unchanged. If you adjust those variables too much you might get different pre boil volumes between batches if in one you have 8lbs of grain and another 16lbs of grain. It works for you but I think he is off by close to 2 gallons of wort.

    Beer Smith/Mash In Volumn

You need to set up your equipment profile in beersmith first. Www.beersmith.com/setting-up-your-equipment-in-beersmith-2/ The video will show you the basics of what all the settings are for. You'll have to adjust for your equipment. Also your screenshot shows you have it set to a temperature...

    Using blow off yeast

So after I refrigerated all of what I got from the blow off I decanted the remaining beer. Then I added boiled and cooled water so I could get it all into one jar. Mixed it up and returned to the fridge. The picture is 1 day later and it took anther 1or 2 days to completely clear and all drop to...

    does false bottom size matter

This is my false bottom. It doesn't go to the edge of the keg and it works fine. Don't worry, the weight of the grains keep it from lifting off the bottom and letting grains under the edge.

    Using blow off yeast

This fermentation has really taken off and is blowing lots of foam. So the first problem I had was the foam was falling into the jar from the top and piled up quickly and began blowing thru the airlock. So I added another tube on the inside of the jar so the foam is pushed thru the now forming...

    Using blow off yeast

I don't have any advice on your stout but this is what I came up with so I could capture the blow out yeast in a sanitary way. The foam collects in the empty jar that has been sanitized with starsan. This way the yeast doesn't sit in starsan. I've wanted to try this since I heard that a lot of...

Adjusting ABV calculations to adjust for a big starter

Don't worry about anything except the OG and volume of both to get the combined OG OG wort 1.121 - 4.6gal OG starter 1.037 - .375gal To find the OG of both the starter and wort combined divide the wort 4.6 by the starter volume .375 = 12.266... units the same size as the starter. Now you can...

Brewing w/ Friends, and then this happens!

I ferment in a spare bedroom with carpet so this would be disastrous for me. I put the small blow off container inside an empty 3 gallon bucket so if it overflows it is still contained.

    Gravity is too high

Ok thanks kh54s10. 24 hours after pitching its at 1.046 so I would guess it was actually somewhat close to the target. It's fermenting nicely now. I was worried I screwed it up by the 50min steeping time and stirring the grains. Is that ok to do and is there any benefit to either as far as...

    Gravity is too high

Yes I topped with 2 gallons of water and swirled the carboy to mix before the gravity reading. I thought it was mixed good but maybe not. I brewed it yesterday so ill check the gravity again now that it looks like it has settled quit a bit stuff on the bottom.

    Gravity is too high

The first time I brewed this partial mash recipe the OG was 1.060 and this time it's 1.104 The target was 1.065 The first batch my grain bag was really full since I supplemented 3lbs more pale 2-row for 2lbs less DME. It seemed to work so I did the same for the second batch but I bought a large...
