    Second attempt pumpkin ale

That's crazy. I broke my thermometer today while checking temps to transfer to carboy after chilling the wort. Luckily only glass and steel fell in, no mercury! Can't wait to brew a nice pumpkin ale for my wife. Hope yours turns out great!

Thanks. Yeah, y'all had me worried so I had to do some research to see if I was going to have to scrap my first batch. I really would have been emotional hahaha.

    Finally brewed my first batch!

Just eased my mind a little. From Midwest's site... "The floating thermometer is especially convenient for the all-grain brewer. This thermometer will float in the mash, giving the brewer tight control over the mash temperature. You'll get quick and accurate measurements with this unit. It is...

    Finally brewed my first batch!

Well I guess I am just going to risk it... It was not boiled in the wort. It only fell in while I was checking temps before I transferred to my carboy. Even if it was lead I wouldn't think it would affect wort for 5 minutes of contact at 70 degrees. I would definitely scrap it if I had boiled...

    Finally brewed my first batch!

No the thermometer still worked, as in the mercury tube was still intact. The little weighted beads in the bottom came out because the tip on the bottom broke off while i was stirring the wort while using my immersion chiller. No mercury in my wort. I know better than that. I would have been...

    Finally brewed my first batch!

So after building and buying way too many things I finally brewed my first batch. I felt like everything went pretty well other than my floating thermometer breaking in my wort. Luckily the only thing that came out was the little beads in the bottom. The filter stopped all of them from going to...

    WLP001 question...

Thanks. I was just worried due to the vial's instructions of 70-75... It had me second guessing my plan.

I am brewing tomorrow!!! I have been trying to prepare for it for a while and I feel so overwhelmed and so excited, like a kid the night before Christmas hahaha. Just trying to button up a few details in some of my other threads. https://www.homebrewtalk.com/f163/wlp001-question-406531/ and...

    First yeast starter...question!

I just went by a video on youtube for the starter. This is my first time with everything. I am probably doing things a little too complex for my first batch but I can't help it. I always dive too deep into anything I get into. If it is too high gravity, what will it cause? Also should I cold...

    First yeast starter...question!

Which would be better? Cold crash or just pitch the whole thing? The whole thing is 2 cups water, 1/2 cup DME, and the yeast vial.

    WLP001 question...

So I am brewing an Autumn Amber ale kit from Midwest tomorrow. The bottle says to ferment at 70-75 degrees. I have been reading around and am under the impression that is on the high side. I was planning to keep temps at 64-66 for the first 5-7 days and then go to 70 for 2 weeks then bottle as...

    First yeast starter...question!

Ok, thanks for easing my mind. I will just take it off the stir plate and pitch the entire flask tomorrow.

    First yeast starter...question!

I can already see a significant difference in the color and consistency. I am planning to brew tomorrow after lunch so that should be a little over 36 hours. Since I did a small size starter, should that be enough time?
