I was really surprised by the difference between fresh and frozen berries (of whatever kind - I've used a few different with same base). People even comment on the brightness of flavor before I get to tell them that they are fresh. Too bad the local berry season is finishing up.

I've heard that refractometers don't work well (or at all) on fermented beer due to the alcohol refracting light differently than water. Try with a hydrometer and see what it says.
