    Maximum Top Up

Hello all, I usually brew 3 gallon batches (post boil), but in my new location the stove sucks and wont bring my full kettle to boil. I need to break up the wort into smaller boil batches. Even then, I wont have enough wort. My question is, how much can I top up post boil to bring my gravity...

    Victory in Pale Ale

Hi, I really love Yoopers APA recipe. I would like to add some victory malt to it and change the hops to Willamette. I am thinking of adding 4.5% victory as an attempt to get a mild(ish) nut flavour. I am not very familiar with Victory so I need some feedback prior to brewing. Does this...

Hops to compliment earthy Grain bill

Hi all! I made a brew with citrus hops and what a mistake. The grain bill had a very interesting 'earthy' quality to it. I want to add hops to compliment this grain bill but don't know much about these kinds of hops. Does anyone have a suggestion for a good hop combination to compliment...

Help Adding Flavor to Pale Ale Please

Hi I have a grain bill for a pale ale that looks great but after a couple of months in the bottle, there is little to no grain taste - it's bland and boring. What could I do or add, grain-wise, to have this brew a little more flavorful? I just want to work on the grains. Any ideas...

    Mash & Sparge Temperature

Hi all, I wanted to mash high in order to get less fermentables. The thing is, I had horrible efficiency and my OG which should have been 1.056 turned out to be 1.048. I usually get 78% efficiency and today I ended up with 66% efficiency. My mash temp. was 160*F, perhaps a couple of...

    Honey Pale Ale

Is this a good ratio of base malt to crystal to honey malt for a simple but tasty ale? If you believe that any other malt or another type of crystal would be better suited, please advise. I haven't brewed with honey malt yet, so I am not sure if a larger percentage should be added to the...

    WLP 008 help

I bought WLP 008 (east coast ale) thinking I could use it for an American pale ale that has some honey malt in it. When I got home I read the specs online - sour/tart flavors? really? I have read as many threads as possible on the yeast. There is very little information out there on it. Has...

My Tongue Burns a Bit with Hydro Sample

It's been a week since I brewed a SMASH beer as part of my brew-clubs experiment. We're all doing a Maris Otter/ Cascade SMASH with different yeasts. I am using WLP007. I just sampled the hydro reading (after one week in the primary) and my tongue kind of burned/ popped a bit - weird. So far...

    Darkening my Pale Ale

Does anyone know how I can darken a pale ale to a mahogany color (or a bit lighter) without changing the flavor of the brew? I am afraid that if I even add 1.5% chocolate malt the flavor will change too dramatically. TIA

    Red to Imperial Red

I have an American red ale that I want to turn into an Imperial Red. Is it as simple as increasing the grain bill as well as the hops, or is there another method of doing this? If there is a thread that pertains to this issue, that I missed, please let me know. TIA

    Gelatin

I'm about to use gelatin for the first time. I am currently dry hopping with whole leafs which is floating on top. Do I pour the gelatin on top of the hops? Obviously, I'm a bit confused. Any help is much appreciated.

    American IPA and WLP002

I need to use up my WLP002 and I want to make an American IPA. I read that I should either add sugar to the boil or mash at a low temperature of I use WLP002 in an American IPA. Is this necessary?.

    Nutty flavored, light colored malt

I just drank a Scottish cream ale that was out of this world. It was very light in color but the length of the hazelnut, malt flavor lasted for days in the mouth. Can anyone steer me in the right direction as to what kind of malt offers this characteristic and how the flavor could last so...

    Help for my SMASH please

Hello, I brewed a one gallon Maris Otter / Amarillo SMASH with 2.75 lbs of grain for the 1 gallon batch. Beersmith gave me a 6.9% ABV At day 5 in the bottle it was extremely well balanced - I was shocked at how great it was but there was no aroma...or very little. at 12 days in the...

    Adding cold water

Should I be adding cold water to make up the difference due to whole leaf hop absorption after transferring cooled wort into carboy? I use the carboy as my primary and use no secondary. TIA

Possible ESB Grain Bill For Review

Hi guys and gals. I'm a relatively new brewer and I'd like to brew an ESB with the following ingredients. I am wondering if you think the percentage of each ingredient would give me a balanced beer - I think I have the hop schedule covered. TIA

Anyone use WLP001 for an ESB?

........and if so, how did it turn out? I can't get my hands on WLP002 so I thought about substituting with 001 which I have in my fridge. TIA
