    Starters and Farming

Thanks for the replies. If I were to take a small portion of a starter, put it in the refrigerator the use it a week later, is there a good way to estimate the number of cells left? Would a step up be needed if you started with, for example, 250ml of the original starter? Thanks again.

    Starters and Farming

Everyone seems to harvest from the yeast cake of a prior batch. Why not make a slightly larger starter and just save 10-20% of that to use for a future starter? It seems like that would be way easier. Has anyone tried this?

Boil time and late extract additions

I do my late dry malt extract additions with 10 minutes to end boil, and it takes me a good 5 minutes after the addition for the wart to start boiling again. When I'm timing my boil, do I stop the timer until we start boiling again or just let it continue to run the entire time? I feel like...

Hopped DME and First Wort Hopping

Is using hopped DME similar to steeping hops along with the specialty grain and are either a good substitute for first wort hopping?

    DME vs LME

People keep telling me that dried malt extract and liquid malt extract are the same (when not hopped), does everyone agree with this? I mean the additional volume in the liquid alone must have some affect, right?

    Yeast Nutrients

I was just wondering what everyone's opinion on yeast nutrients was. I started the batch four days ago in the primary fermentation is slowing, I didn't add any nutrients up front... does it make sense that to add them now?

    Extract boiling and timing

Thanks for the posts. I was cautioned about adding the lme at flameout because it doesn't give it a chance to sterilize. That's why people suggested adding it at 15 minutes to end boil. Just a thought. Thanks again

    Extract boiling and timing

So I'm new to extract brewing and I have read recipes describing boiling the entire extract for 60 minutes. I was talking to a few people, and they suggested waiting until about 15 minutes to end boil before adding my extract to avoid crystallization of my sugars. I'm trying to brew a very hoppy...
