    I fear I've ruined it..

Just an update on this. Just drunk the last bottle; it turned out great :)

I think my fermentation has stopped early

I'm currently doing a brown ale. The OG was 1.045 and the FG is supposed to be 1.010-1.012. It had a good thick layer of foam on top for the first few days (we started it last Tuesday), I'd say the ambient temperature probably ranges from 17-20C where it is, we've had warm weather recently, but...

How cold is too cold for storing beer for conditioning?

It's carbonated fairly well at the moment as I've had a few small bottles to test. The instructions are below; I actually had to refer to a previous set of instructions for the temperature of a 'cool place', as to be honest, cool could vary from 5-15C quite easily in my own definition, I'd say...

How cold is too cold for storing beer for conditioning?

I've recently finished a batch of homebrew (bottled 2 weeks ago) and it said that once bottled, to store in in a warm place for a few days, then a cool place. It didn't specify a temperature, but I remember a previous kit I'd done defined a cool place as 8-10 degrees C. My house has a...

    I fear I've ruined it..

Yeah, pretty much 200g of caster sugar into 5 gallons. It was fermented at 68-70 and the bottles are currently in a room at the same temperature. It's good to hear it's not as inevitable as I thought.

    I fear I've ruined it..

I've basically wrapped them heavily in bin bags, and they're also in groups in smallish boxes, plus covered with a duvet, so if any of them decide the pressure is too much, it shouldn't ruin the carpet. I've done about 5 swing-tops, so I'll do the remove and reseal suggested in a couple of days...

    I fear I've ruined it..

I decided to bottle my Woodfordes Wherry in the early hours (so I wouldn't be dominating the kitchen all day), and I've pretty much just finished, however, I noticed in the very late stages of bottling that I'd made quite a major cock-up. The instructions said half a teaspoon per pint, which I...

1 Day Bottled & Plastic Bottles Stiff Already

They were stiff after the first day (and I did get slightly concerned that my glass bottles would explode at this point), they got stiffer and stiffer. Probably peaked at day 3. I had no bottle bomb issues in the end, and they all turned out very nicely (most have been drunk now!). All were very...

Brown residue on top of foam

Thanks again for your help, everyone. The beer came out very nicely and is now nearly all gone :(

1 Day Bottled & Plastic Bottles Stiff Already

I used a mixture of glass and plastic bottles to bottle my first brew, all the plastic bottles got stiff rather quickly, and got stiffer and stiffer, to the point where I could get no flex at all, all within a couple of days. If the temperature you're storing the bottles at is quite high, that...

    Fermentation Stopped Early?

Thanks, that makes a lot of sense, learning all the time! Will take a reading tomorrow, and the day after to be sure, then bottle on Saturday if there's no change. I'm a lot less worried now, as I assumed it was still quite far from its final gravity! This is my 2nd homebrew ever, and I don't...

    Fermentation Stopped Early?

I'm almost definitely misreading the hydrometer. I've posted an image below of the instructions, and where my beer currently is on the hydrometer. If anyone could please enlighten me as to how I've misread it, that'd be very much appreciated. I'm still in a hungover state and unable to...

    Fermentation Stopped Early?

I'm currently brewing a bitter, I started it on the 23rd, and it suggests 4-6 days for fermentation. It also suggested a temperature of 18-20 degrees C for fermentation, so I decided I'd put it next to my home server in another room, rather than the airing cupboard. I left it there until the...

Brown residue on top of foam

My instructions say 10 days so I'll try not to check it until next week. Although I am a bit worried the cupboard is a little too warm, I think I'll leave it where it is for now and see how it turns out as it's one of the few places in the house which will have a steady temperature (heating is...

Brown residue on top of foam

I've checked it twice today, once in the morning before I left for work, and once when I got home, which is when I took the picture :) Would I be best off dialing that down to once a day, or perhaps even less? As it's my first batch, it's hard to resist the temptation to sneak a peak. I'll try...

Brown residue on top of foam

Thanks - I'll not worry about the residue now I know it's normal, although I am now slightly concerned that the cupboard is a bit too warm. The instructions on my kit said ferment at 22-25C, so I'm at the upper end of that really. I left the spoon in, as the thermometer (also still in there)...

Brown residue on top of foam

Hello! I'm new here, and new to brewing; I started my first brew yesterday. I just have a quick question about a brown residue I've had develop on top of my foam. From my preliminary research, it appears to be 'brown kraeusen', but I just wanted to make sure this is normal, seeing that it's only...
