Advice for a brewer who doesn't drink

Edited November 19th, 2012 ******************************** To save you the time of reading all (currently) 27 pages, let me recap: 1. I am accused of being a troll - I am not 2. Most people think I should at least taste the beer - I still do not 3. The general consensus is that people wouldn't...

    OG calculations off by 30%

I have been incredibly frustrated my last few brews, because my efficiency comes out to around 50%. I have been using Beersmith for my calculations. On a whim, I downloaded Beer Alchemy and put in the recipe I did last night that I missed by 9 gravity points. At 65% efficiency (which I had...

Don't understand the OG from this microbrewery

Pyramid's Outburst says that it has an OG of 20, which I assumed meant 1.020. But that doesn't make any sense to me, if it's an 8.5% ABV brew. Is this another unit of measure that I don't know about, like IBU vs HBU?

    First Yeast Washing, feedback? [photos]

I followed a yeast washing tutorial, and I think it went well. Boiled and sanitized everything. Poured leftovers in fermenter and water into large jar, shook, and it separated. I poured the liquid into three jars, and there was definitely a thick layer of trub/gunk on the bottom that didn't...

For Sale - US Sanke tap/keg coupler

I have 8 sanke taps for sale, $15 plus shipping (probably around $5, but depends on location). I am getting ready to clean them up and scrub them down. I'm in the Portland, OR area, so if you're here, get them for no shipping. Thanks! Edit: That's $15 each, not for all.

Force carbing in sanke keg, too much space?

I inherited a sanke keg and want to try my hand at force carbing, using the set and forget method for a couple of weeks. If I put a 5 gallon batch into the keg and hit it with CO2, am I wasting a lot of CO2 because of the the extra 10 gallons or so of space in the keg? And/or will that create...

Kit IBU range nowhere near BeerSmith calculations

I got Jason Breatt's Honey Stout kit, made and bottled with no problems. However, I went to store the recipe in BeerSmith, and got completely different IBU details. The kit says it should be 30-34, but BeerSmith says 13.3. What do I believe here? Also, I classified it as a Sweet Stout. Is...

    Auto-siphon vs spigot for bottling

I am fermenting in a bucket with a spigot, and not racking to secondary. I have bottled a couple batches using the auto siphon in the top, but that's a bit of a pain. Moving the beer to another bucket just for bottling so I could use a spigot would have the same sort of possible issues as...

    Too much gravity!

I just brewed my third batch, and went with the honey stout from morebeer.com. Grains were: 8 oz Black Barley 4 oz Munich 4 oz Honey Malt Extract: 6 lbs Light LME .5 lbs Light DME Here's where I think I may habe gotten confused and screwed up. It also came with 4 oz Maltodextrin...

    Water contamination during cooling

Having read How To Brew, Palmer stresses not to let any water drip into the wort while chilling in the ice bath. But then on the next page, he says to fill the fermenter up to 5 gallons of tap water if your water is good. It seems strange to me that there is a huge emphasis and then a lax. Is...
