    Moar questions about propane plumbing...

Tons of info out there, none of it seems to be what I need. I am working on plumbing my new stand and have a couple questions. I plan on using standard 1/2 black pipe running to 2 large bayou classic banjo burners. One: will the general design I have attached work? Basically a center pipe...

I want to put together a partigyle for the upcoming St Patties holiday. Thinking a Strong Scottish ale with first runnings, and an Irish Red with second. First Grain Bill: Maris Otter Malt (40.55%) Vienna (40.55%) Munich I (7.37%) Crystal 60 (5.53%) Special Roast (5.53%) Chocolate...

Souring and using wood barrels. General tips needed

Hey gang, either my google-fu sucks, or there is not a lot out there for homebrewers on using wood barrels for aging and souring. Couple of questions, and if you have any other tips, tricks or processes that you can think of, please post! I want to start using a barrel for sour aging. It...

Running beer lines through top freezer?

Couldn't seem to find anyone who has asked this question! Thinking of moving from the keezer to a standard keggerator (lots of reasons why...) Anyway, was wondering if anyone has mounted their taps in the freezer door and not the main refrigerator door? (I'm not interested in side mounting...

Dry hopping in keg, and CO2 blasting?

Not sure where I ran across this idea but now I cant find it. I read somewhere about the process of transferring from primary to a corny and throwing dry hops in there, then blasting CO2 in the liquid out tube every so often. Can anyone point me to more info on this? Has anyone done it?

Whirlpool and a LOT of foam?

Gang, I just added a Chugger pump and installed a weldless whirlpool port to my kettle. My process is very standard: Put wort chiller in pot with 10 minutes left in boil Knock out flame Turn on water for chiller Turn on pump to whirlpool during chilling Pull out chiller when desired...

Just another wood brew rig build...

Same ole story... tired of balancing my mash tun on old janky patio tables and stuff LOL. Time to grow up a little... Step 1: buy some wood Step 2: Mock up some basic height and length measurements Step 3: Start from the bottom and build up. I knew that I wanted a "detachable"...

    Thoughts on a Vienna Hefe?

I need to brew a Vienna Lager and a Hefe at about the same time and was thinking about a Partigyle with the second runnings becoming the Hefe. Any thoughts on how the Vienna grain bill would turn out with a Hefe yeast? Something is telling me not to try it LOL I want to use Revvy's grain...

    Doughnuts / Pies in beer

Ok, I have now had a few beers where the breweries claim do dump whole pies or doughnuts into the brew. I assume its in some kind of secondary fermentation? I cant find any info on this in my 7 second google search. Anyone do this? At what stage of the brew did you incorporate the baked...

First try at a hops tasting process

Well, here is what I did today to try and find a process which will allow our HB club to do hops tastings to refine our pallet's and better understand what individual hops taste like. Pics first, then some thoughts... I only used 2 hops for now. Centenninal and EKG. My scale apparently is not...

    BJCP certification and beer enjoyment...

Our HB Club is going to put a bunch of people through the certification and I am seriously considering doing it. In the back of my mind I wonder if learning THAT much about beer and its flaws makes beer drinking less enjoyable? Curious to hear from those of you who are certified - did the...

Setting up a hops tasting experiment

Our homebrew club had a malt tasting event in the spring, and we want to run a hops event soon. I was surprised how little info I found on the interwebs about doing some kind of tasting. Here are a couple of thoughts and questions, please chime in with what you think would work best, how you...

What do YOU do with dry yeast?

I had a professional brewer tell me that they never rehydrate their dry yeast. I always have, just because most people seem to do it. Just looking for some data either way!

    Stupid Cidery Saison!

I love the Saison style, but just cant get it right. This time I think its infected. Didnt notice any fuzzy stuff growing on it when I racked to keg, but it tasted just a little cidery then, and sure is a lot more cidery now. Is this something that I can let sit for a while to become a sour...

New(ish) Hops Testing Lab In Michigan

Not sure if anyone has posted about this already. A buddy of mine just put this on his facebook page so I thought I'd share. I have not used their service, and I dont work for them so this is in no way a sales pitch. Hoping someone uses them and gives us a report! http://karlabs.com/hops.htm

Bottling from a Perlick with only the rubber hose?

I know there are all kinds of ways to rig up a "stinking beer gun" with a cobra tap, bottling wand and stopper, and I know you can do a similar thing off the faucet as well. However at every brewery I have been to, they just stick a piece of tube over the end of the faucet and fill at serving...

    Stored yeast got warm, thoughts?

I have about 6 mason jars of saved yeast that were in a fridge in our breezeway. The fridge died at some point this week and I didnt notice till today. I suspect that they warmed up to at least 75 degrees during the day for several days. Are all my little buddies lost? They still looked...

STC1000, temp up and down in keezer?

I have had a stc1000 on my ferm fridge for a long time, and it works great. Its in an external box. I keep the probe taped to the side of whatever is fermenting, insulated by a 3" chunk of paper towel. I made another box to run my keezer, and it worked fine. Temps did not seem to swing very...

    Black Diamond: Another Keezer Build

This is an homage to all who have come before me! Thanks for all the inspiration. Started with a hell of a deal on a used freezer. Bigger than I was looking for, but what the hell.

    Shake a keg to mix?

I am going to be adding some sugar free Tangerine syrup to a wheat beer for my fruity beer friends. I plan on letting it ferment out for a month or so then rack to a keg where I will add the syrup. Any reason I cant / shouldnt purge the keg and then shake it up to mix? I was thinking...
