TIL: never give up on a beer.

I had a simple 5 gal batch ale(Northern Brewers on top of Willamette, 13lb of pale ale malt) and left it in the primary fermenter for almost a year, procrastinating--had everything to keg it but some tubing and starsan--and drinking store bought beer. Figuring it would be ruined, I opened it up...

    Tried harvesting yeast today

I bottled my first all grain batch--uncarbonated it wasn't too bad tasting. Can't wait till its conditioned. I put one gallon into the fermenter and swirled, let stand for 10 minutes then siphoned off 4 quarts. There are 4 quarts of stark white yeast settling in the fridge right now. I would...

    Over attenuated?

So the all grain batch I brewed last wednesday is down to 1008 from 1054. The estimated final gravity was around 1010-1015. I used 11lbs of pale malt to make a 5 gallon batch. Is this overattenuated? It is quite dry and has little hops taste to it. I'm going to bottle tomorrow. Did I screw...

    All grain is crazy cheap!

So I figured that all in all my costs for the pale ale I brewed last night was $13.54 or a quarter a bottle! wow! Not including the cost of the equipment, lol! Sam Adams is $1.42 a bottle at the store, lol!

First all grain batch last night

I finished my cooler mash tun on monday night and finally had some time to try it out. I put in 11 lbs of briess 2 row pale malt. The OG came out to 1054 which was 75% by my calculations--which are probably wrong--but I put in too little sparge water the first time and ran another gallon...

Yay! I made beer! and not Mr. Beer either

My Brewers Best American Cream Ale appears to be finished fermenting. The OG was 1050 and the FG was 1012, which makes sense since I used extra DME in place of the corn sugar. Now, to bottle or to keg. Next step all grain!

    Brew Party

We did a Coopers IPA--VERY EASY!, a Brewers Best American Cream Ale--I swapped the 1lb of corn sugar for another lb of DME--not that hard, and my wort chiller worked like a charm, Mead, and some semblence of Pruno. Funny, the pruno minus ketchup is bubbling away in the cellar and the two...

    Isolating strains

So my friend is going to do a turbo yeast pack. I wanted to isolate the strain off of his yeast cake and amplify it for use. Is turbo yeast generally single strain or can I isolate with like 15-18% ethanol on a maltose plate? I wanted to plate out, select single colonies and select a viable...

My friends are doing our first brew party!

My friend just bought a bunch of equipment off of his brother and he wants to learn how to brew, so we are all getting together to show him. My friend Ethan is going to do his Mead. I'm going to try out my new MLT and make an extract batch too, and I am going to find something similiar and...

    Irony

Isn't the Sam Adams IPA equivalent to a Vladimir Lenin Imperial stout? None of my FB friends got the irony in this one.

    Test run

I had a couple of mr beer kits left over from my play phase--X-SWMBO #1 got me mr beer for christmas in spite of specific instructions, lol!--and I decided to put the vienna lager and canadian whatever it is in with 3 of the 'booster' packs and boiled it all together and put it into one of my...
