    Strangulation of enjoyment

Woke up early, was scrolling thru news articles, and noticed that distillery bankruptcies are a thing these days, with some big players like Jack Daniel’s cutting costs by outsourcing barrel production and reorganizing (likely firing) management teams. So switched to You tube over coffee and...

    Lowest price homebrew

I noticed a FB marketplace add where they are selling barley for $4 for about 25 lbs. So if you figure $.16/lb. , and 2-row by the sack at $1 lb you could throw together a simple grain bill of 6lbs 2 row and 4 lbs unmalted barley for 6.64. I could use my homegrown hops but if I buy some hops...

Is 100% Brett fermentation worth the wait?

I just listened to the Experimental Brewing podcast about Alesong’s French 75 gin barrel saison. It sounds like if I use all Brett to ferment it’s going to take many months until it’s ready. I’m already going to cut corners by using spirals or chips soaked in gin instead of the barrel aging...

    Convertible Chest Freezer/Refrigerator

I was in home depot a few days ago and spotted a chest freezer that also functions as a refrigerator. Also it can be controlled using a smart phone. The one I saw was $299, the link below is a little higher. Anyone have one of these? Do you like how well it works...

No two buck chuck? why don't prices come down?

According to media and industry reports, wine consumption is in decline. TV news reports show videos of wine grapes left unharvested and entire vineyards being ripped out to be replaced by other crops. So why don't we see a similar correction in prices? Simple economics 101: excess supply...

AHA comments from the home brewing community

There have been a few threads generated by employees of the AHA, how about a free form discussion about either why you are participating in the AHA or why you choose not to? I’ll kick it off: It’s just not a good value for me. When they have the AHA convention in Baltimore, San Diego, or...

The truth about beer and cancer

I'm sitting here watching the NFL playoffs and enjoying a Mad Elf Holliday Ale (11%) and since the game isn't looking all that competitive, my thoughts turn to the recent Surgeon General advisory that drinking alcohol is linked to being diagnosed with cancer. So I look on google and see what I...

    Warm homebrew is ok

So my cheap freezer-kegerator quit working, and although I got another one, it’s not set up yet. I’ve got 4 kegs with picnic taps sitting in a 62F basement, and it’s not bad. Hoppy Amber, dry stout, Ruthless rye inspired, and and a no-boil graff is the line up. I’m not missing it being cold...

    Poetry that includes beer

My wife is gone, my girl is gone, my books are loaned, my clothes are worn, I gave away a car; and all that happened years ago. Mind & matter, love & space are frail as foam on beer. —Gary Snyder Please add some more…. :mug:

    Another LHBS gone

High gravity brewing in Tulsa is closed for good. In addition to supplies, they also had a small brewery and a winery and they produced The Wort Hog electric brewing systems. Just another example that the homebrewing hobby is still shrinking I suppose. :tank:

    $12 dry yeast for beer?

Just noticed in my email, N. Brewer now has White Labs dry Cal Ale yeast, but it’s $12. If you were in sales, what would you say to a brewer to persuade them to spend more for this yeast compared to all the other dry yeast choices out there. I used to use all WL liquid yeast, but the cost has...

    RIP Ashmead

When I first got into cider making, I hunted down all the orchards within a half days drive, looking for heirloom varieties that would make a hard cider better than the usual eating apples everyone grows. Then, close to home, a very large orchard started selling Ashmead’s Kernal Apples. I used...

    Hacking Picobrew appliances

From time to time I see old Picobrew appliances for sale cheap. There are online resources about setting up your own server using a rasberryPi device and writing some code, but I'm thinking of going more low rent and just installing electrical switches to turn it into a manually operated...

Great cider for blending with Bud Light

ABInbev was offering $15 rebates, so I took 'em up on it and ended up with two 18 packs for $3.50 after rebate. Bud Light is kinda tasteless but I've found some great ciders that should blend with the Bud very nicely...

Anything new re: Invert vs not inverted sugar use?

So after many years away, I returned to the Homebrew network podcasts and found Jamil is still there and on a recent podcast he was discussing Gale's Prize Old Ale. Invert #1 or #3 is used, and I decided to hunt around and find if there was anything new about using invert sugar vs/other...
