Does OG relate to alcohol level?

I've noticed that on a lot of beer recipe kits that they don't say the estimated alcohol level in the description. Does the OG relate to a guess of what the alcohol may be? Does an OG of 1.085 mean 8.5%?

    Drips from oven hood

I was wondering how others deal with the drips coming from the hood above an oven. I live in a rental and the hood is old and greasy on the underside. During my first (and only) brew I noticed that after the full boil had been going for a while, with the exhaust fan on high, that water was...

Do PET bottles work for beer? What be the reason for choosing that over glass?

Rushed during brew day more stressful than relaxing

I only brewed once so far but I made sure that the kitchen was mine! At least she didn't mind the house smelling like beer, which I loved.

    Completed First Brew, Successfully!!

Thanks, it was a tough wait! I am thinking of brewing the Dead Ringer IPA from NB next but I have yet to order it. I had planned on doing another as soon as my primary was available but you know how that goes.

    Completed First Brew, Successfully!!

:ban: Just tasted my first home brew! Brewed NB Caribou Slobber and it turned out pretty well after 3-weeks-primary and 2-weeks-bottled. Thanks to everyone who has left comments/answers on my previous posts, it was nice to have a place to turn to. It tastes good, there is nothing "off" in the...

    Caribou Slobber fermentation time

I appreciate all the info. I think I will try using the secondary since I paid for the damn thing! In the future though, I will try primary only as well.

    Caribou Slobber fermentation time

Thanks for the good info guys. I'm hearing a lot of advice to skip the secondary here but elsewhere some say that it is beneficial. I am anxious to try both ways, so far it just seems like personal preference with no clear advantage either way. So a hydrometer is really worth it? How exactly do...

    Caribou Slobber fermentation time

I don't have the gravity tester and I am trying to figure out how much time to allow the beer to ferment. I have a primary and secondary fermenter and I was thinking of two weeks for each plus two weeks in the bottles to condition. Would it be too short to do one week primary and two week...

    Should yeast sink when pitched?

Phew! Thanks guys. By the way, I can't believe the short response time on this forum, it has been awesome.

    Should yeast sink when pitched?

I just finished my first batch ever, everything seemed to go okay. My one big question is whether or not the yeast should sink when pitched. There was a bit of foam on top in the primary fermenter after I added the cold water and wort and swirled to aerate it. The yeast sat on top of the foam...

    Didn't refrigerate dry yeast pack

Thanks guys, appreciate the info! My brew day seems to have been successful! I guess I won't know for sure until its actually tasting day though. :mug:

    Didn't refrigerate dry yeast pack

I recently got my brew kit from Northern Brewer but I failed to refrigerate my dry yeast pack that came with it. Caribou Slobber Brown ale will be my first home brew attempt but now I am worried about my yeast! Does it matter that my yeast pack sat at room temperature for a while? Please...

    Note Taking for Beginners

I have seen a lot of threads on organizing equipment and on elaborate spreadsheets but I have been wondering about tips on good record keeping for a beginner. I have just mail ordered my first brew kit, the deluxe kit from Northern Brewer, and I would like to make sure I am off to a good...
