Bottom line cost of bulk grains?

Any idea what north country charges to ship a back or two?

Bottom line cost of bulk grains?

When you figure the cost per batch remember you have to pay to ship every time. Unless you are getting it local from Austin? Shipping all the batches can add up throughout the year which is just another way to justify the mill.

Efficiency, after mash or after boil, does it matter?

Thanks guys. Since I'm batch sparging I generally just end up with what I end up with. I was pleased to find on this last beer I actually did better than the recipe.

Efficiency, after mash or after boil, does it matter?

sorry, half a quart per pound. I normally lose about 2 gallons on a 1.060 beer. I have a big mash tun with a thin grain bed could that be contributing to it?

Efficiency, after mash or after boil, does it matter?

I'm trying to get an idea of how efficient my setup is. I don't have an exact measure of the post sparge volume and I forgot to get a hydrometer reading. I did do it after the boil. It came out to 68%, is this not a valid measure? The reason I want to know if for changine recipes and such...

2.5g keg, thoughts on cutting one down.

I have no idea. my sanke keg is much thicker than that. I have not had the chance to cut open a corny yet.

2.5g keg, thoughts on cutting one down.

I've yet to be able to try my solar flux but this is suppose to take the place of back gassing, if you used pure argon and stainless wire you should be able to weld up the stainless just fine. I also can't speak to how well it holds shape, I'd imagine with a few tacks it should be just fine...

    PA Brewers UNTIE!!

Ayrton - are you Tom, If not then there are 3.. I'd be all for Lancaster. Would this be a brew get together or just a gathering? I'm all for meeting more local people. Just let us know when. March in PA can be a bit chilly though so maybe May would be better.

    Warning about shipping with McMasterCarr

I agree here, it was a bad assumption on your part to think they would coil the tubing, most are buying straight tube for that reason. Getting that stuff straight again sucks. Plus I think you got next day shipping right? I realize it ended up costing you but this should be counted as a...

    Hop Order

Not to throw another company in the mix but we just got a hops direct order of cascade and they are sweet. With shipping to PA our "pound" came out to $.60/oz

Gott versus rectangular, false bottom verusus everything else

I batch sparge because for me it is easy, bed depth doesn't really matter if you batch sparge and you can still run herms with it. Everything will be the same except you sparge faster. I use a 70qt for 5G batches.

Did I manage to build a mash tun for $0 out of pocket?

way to go, I built mine for $15. Batch sparge and buy precrushed grains from austinhombrew. You are all set.

    SWMBO asked for this...

I think this is great, the only thing I asked swmbo for is a good chef knife. I'm getting the global g2. I don't see the problem with things like this, I want it and would not normally drop the money on it for myself.

Bottle condition vs keg and temp

yeah that is what I thought as well, I think it is the beer blending together and I guess some of the sharp flavors mellow out. I didn't think it was the yeast which is why we stuck it in the fridge right away.

Bottle condition vs keg and temp

So this extra conditioning is a function of the yeast right? Think we should take the keg out to warm up for a while?
