New style Coopers IPA kit... any good?

Like you, every once in a while I just want to throw something together quickly. Sometimes I just don't have time to put in a full brew day. Anyway, about three weeks ago I decided to order a coopers Australian Pale Ale kit (for some reason my wife and I like that one). I didn't know about...

    Adding Water vs. Not

My experience is that I saw a noticeable difference in the quality and taste of my beers once I went to full volume boils, and the best extract batches I made before going to 5 gallon all grain, were full volume boils.

What are your personal experiences with naturally carbing in the keg

I have actually only primed the keg once, usually force carb. I primed a batch of brown ale that I kegged too green, and let it sit for three or four weeks. It turned out great, and honestly wound up being one of my best extract batches.

Help with my local water profile

Thank you for the layman's explanation. Like I said, I am just beginning with water chemistry, and admittedly do not understand it yet. I got those numbers directly from the water company. Go figure. Now that I understand your advice, I will take the step you recommended. Thanks again.

WOW! All grain kits are expensive

I don't really buy in bulk, but I do buy more base malts than I need and vacuum pack. I buy small amounts of specialty grain from LHBS. I harvest and repitch yeast, which I think provides a good savings. Even if I buy out a whole recipe from my LHBS, I am not anywhere close to those all...

Help with my local water profile

Thanks for your reply. Truth be told, I don't really understand the problem with the report though ... or how to adjust it. I guess I will just continue buying RO water for now.

Help with my local water profile

Hello again. Since I have been brewing all grain, I have buying RO water and building from there. That gets a little expensive and is a pain since I have to drive about 15 miles to get it. So, I called my local water provider and got the following information from their lab. Ca...

    Help with water profile

Hello, I have been reading a ton about water after getting into all grain brewing last year, but at times I think I am still as confused as when I started out. Here is my question. Googled everywhere, searched the forums, and can't find an answer. I plain to brew an Australian Pale...

Easiest way to keep costs down on recipes?

This. You could go BIAB with minimal cost though.

First brew - cooper wheat beer kit

I used that can as part of a quick blue moon clone. Beer was good and not watery. Biggest thing I have learned in home brewing so far, patience is key to making good beer. Give it some time to carb up, then try it again. I recommend using DME in place of brew enhancer though.

    1st bottling today and....

I bottled today too! Three 750ml and 22 oz'er. Keep at it. It will get better.

To hydrate or not Danstar Nottingham Yeast

Good point about proofing. I haven't had one that failed to ferment yet, but its possible. Now, I'll double down on discouraged practices. I have harvested the dry pitched yeast using the no wash method from the sticky, and repitched the slurry for two generations with very good results.

    What's in your fermenter(s)?

Just kegged a Poor Richards Ale, and kegged the Himbeerweizen yesterday. All that is left in a fermenter is a Kolsch/Blonde Ale. Time to brew!

    What are you drinking now?

Drinking an English bitter that I brewed about two months ago and kegging a Ben Franklin Poor Richard's Ale that is delicious while watching the bowl game.

How long is your brew day?

Mine have been averaging about 5-6 hours. I use an igloo marine cooler mash tun, a igloo water cooler asa HLT and I batch sparge. A lot of that time is waiting around during the steps, so I usually smoke a cigar, watch some football and clean as I go which shaves off a little time.

To hydrate or not Danstar Nottingham Yeast

When I started out, I rehydrated on every batch. Then I thought, why not try it without rehydrating? My thought process was, how much difference is there between rehydrating in a small vessel with water and a bit of sugar and rehydrating in a larger vessel with water and a bit of sugar...

Is Your Christmas Brew Done On Time?

We had a bunch of people over for the holidays. The winter welcome got good feedback, and the keg was emptied. I was pretty excited about the brew, and before everyone arrived we picked up a bottle of Sam Smiths to do a side by side comparison. We unscientifically taste tested it, and...

How bad do you think this is?

I think you will be fine. The extra boiling will have killed anything that got in. Unless a ton hose water got in, I don't think you will have rubber flavor fro the hose. That Same thing happened to me on the first batch I brewed outside with a new IC. I gambled that not much hose water...

    What's next on your Brewgenda?

After putting it off two brew days while I waited for the grains I ordered to come in, I am finally going to brew the 1940 Porter recipe.
