    Added Priming Sugar, Got Sick

On Sunday I had planned to bottle. I had gotten two identical hydrometer readings two days apart. I got so far as adding the priming sugar (it's in the primary still. Both of my buckets are full of drinkables, so I don't have a bottling bucket anymore) and then came down with a fever (103!)...

Spontaneous Fermentation in Juice on Counter

The other day the fridge was just so packed I didn't have room for the blueberry pomegranate (from concentrate) juice that's in a huge container we use for mixing it. So, I left it out. The next day (or was it two days later?) I drank some mixed with water (I know it's unusual, but it's usually...

    Oil Slick on Beer

The only two batches of beer I've made so far have this oil-slick like appearance on top of them in the fermenter. It's not over the whole surface, but broken up. The first batch turned out fine taste-wise, and this second batch is still in the primary but I can see it on the surface again...

New to brewing, finishing gravity too high

Man, sounds almost the same! Except this is day 11, and mine is at .012 at the first hydrometer reading, and I was thinking that was pretty high. I also scorched it. I will take another reading in a few days and see where it's at, and then wait a little while after I bottle it to see how it's doing!

Not "Easy", Not Quick 1-Gallon Mead Recipe?

I'm new to mead making but I've done a little bit of beer brewing and I'm moderately familiar with the fermentation process. I'm also patient and am fine with waiting a fair bit (6 months to a year sounds pretty reasonable) for good mead. I want to make a dry, still mead. I don't want it to...

How much beer do you drink daily?

1 or 2, sometimes more, sometimes none.

The stupidest comment on your beer

Ahh, what happens when you're semi-chronically sleep-deprived :P (new baby in the house.)

    Bottles for bottling

Wouldn't that cause a vacuum, though, and tend to make it decarbonate (or, rather, not carbonate to begin with)?

The stupidest comment on your beer

Well, sure, but there is some kind of recipe they're patterning it after - IE, the real deal. I guess I don't know enough about what Budwieser is. What is the real version of what they're trying to copy? Do they just do a poor job at imitating it? Otherwise, maybe it's like certain processed...

    Best Recipe Book/Resource?

I know that beer brewing seems to be something that I will learn to make recipes for, but are there any really good books out there? I don't know where to find true and tried recipes for (especially) the beginner brewer who doesn't want to just go to the store and throw things together.

    Bottling in Perrier bottles

I'd like to know as well! :)

    Hydrometers Suck

I haven't yet but I treat it like a piece of spun glass. It's just glass, after all, and it's very slender!

    Willamette Valley Hops

I don't know much about their hops but I just drove by one of their fields today on my way to the interstate (I live nearby) and they are *beautiful*! A very nice sight indeed :)

    Brewing with newborns

Well, I haven't brewed beer with her (our newborn! five weeks old today) yet but I bottled a batch when she was about a week old and last week I started some Apfelwein. Can't wait to get the next batch of beer going. We're just about out of the last :(

    Meet My New Brewbuddy!!

Woo hoo! That's the exact weight she gained at her two-week, too :) She has had two baths - one she seemed to like and the second she hated. Maybe she was just figuring out what it was the first time and decided she didn't like it. Good to hear the fussy period is shorter. Shorter and...

    Non-beer use for DME

That's Reinhart's book?! I've seen it but didn't notice it was his book. My my. I'll have to buy that for my husband. We have Crust and Crumb (that's the bagel recipe I use) and we love it.

    Newby from Portland OR

It's addictive! Dive right in. I waited a long time to buy equipment and I so regret it. All the beer I could have made in the past few years!!

    Hello from Portland, OR

Awesome! I'm in Newberg, not too far away. I've been buying stuff at Above The Rest in Tigard but I want to visit more places in Portland and check out what is available. Where do you buy your brewing supplies? I just started, too, by the way. I started a batch thinking I'd be able to bottle...
