First, dont get rid of it! Never give up because you "think" you may have messed it up. Wait it out and at least learn a few new things.
Sometime within the next 24-48 hours is when fermentation may really kick off. I have only done one cider (the cherry version from the same company) and it...
Hmm, looks moldy to me from this shot. Is fermentation done? How does it taste?
1. Unless it's putrid I would let it ride (unless someone can chime in about that type of mold)
2. I don't purge my primary and have had no problems with contamination or oxidation. I believe that's more common for...
I just mixed together a batch of this stuff, I cant wait to try it out! (Is that actually a thing, getting excited for cleaning??)
I got the TSP90 and 7th gen from amazon and the oxo brite from costco.com (added like $1.80 since Im not a member).
Total cost = $55.47 for ~19lbs coming out to...
Why build a stir plate when you can but a laboratory grade one from amazon?
Why use a fan lying around when you can buy a fancier one that has speed controls built in?
Why make beer when you can buy a case of PBR at the store?
The answer to all these is because brewers like to make stuff...
I dont think that putting hops into a liquid will affect how the hops act in liquid.
I assume you are dry hopping in a keg and force carbing that?
For dry hopping in a keg I think the most common practice is to put the pellets into a hop sack and use some unflavored floss to tie it so it wont...
The stir plate works! The stir bar is definitely a little more chattery so I'll have to check that the magnet didn't move on me later on, but it's a start!
I decided it was time to make a stir plate since I had... most everything laying around.
I initially purchased magnets from harbor freight, but those more or less sucked and I quickly tore apart an old hard drive for a free much stronger magnet.
I cut a bunch of holes in a cigar box and...
I bottled the two pepper tests and the control the other day.
I ended up adding ~.6gal of the control to the roasted hab batch to even out the piquancy before priming and bottling.
Both the fresh and the roasted batches tasted delicious and had a nice throat tingling finish that Im interested...
I dumped in the vodka with the peppers, it was what I think a negligible amount.
The roasted habanero batch did indeed taste a bit spicier yesterday so I threw them into the fridge for a cold crash and will be bottling tomorrow.
At this point I think I will add half a gallon of the control...
Fermentation temperature depends on the yeast strain you have. You can google the strain and the spec documentation will tell you what temperature range the yeast will work best in. You really shouldn't go lower than the advised temperature range or you risk your yeast being too cold to work...
See if you can do two layers of the R5 material, it shouldn't interfere too much with operation.
My recent fermentation chamber has ~R10 and my minifridge hasnt had a problem keeping roughly 17 cu ft 10-14d cooler than my house's thermostat is set.
Moving your freezer inside will ikely have...
Post a picture so we can see whats up.
It sounds like you didnt insulate the collar you made. Most wood 1.5" thick has an R value of 2 which is pretty awful in the cooling world.
Grab a sheet of foam insulation board (reflextic is less effective retaining the cold) and line the inside with a...
Yeast washing is so easy I would give it a shot.
Save your washed yeast for a week or two, try a bottled beer and if acceptable I would personally use that collected yeast.
Better yet, how does it smell/taste?
I havent had a batch look like that at bottling time, but each batch also has looked a little different thus far..
I'd smell it, if it doesnt smell like death, taste it, if it doesnt taste bad, bottle it!
I made a 5gal SMASH with Marris Otter and Challenger

.5oz Challenger 30min
.5oz Challenger 15min
.5oz Challenger 0min
.5oz Challenger dry hop 7 days

I brewed on the 10th OG 1.055 by the 22nd the samples were consistent at...
Good choices, tonight is the NoDable release (a weekly one-off) at NoDa brewing and they are almost always pretty good!
You just missed Free Range's 1 yr birthday party on Saturday but they may have some cool kegs leftover from that!
