    Daft questultion on dry hopping

Should be alright. I had back issues last week so had to let a pale ale dry hop for 12 days instead of the planned 7 before I could bottle. Hydrometer sample tasted great with no hint of a grassy taste (not that I'd know what that tasted like anyway).

    Are these colored specks normal?

Completely normal looking. Walk away and be happy.

American Pale Ale Bee Cave Brewery Haus Pale Ale

First taste of my batch of this after 3 weeks carbing up in bottles. Easily my best effort since my return to brewing last summer. Followed the recipe apart from using carapale instead of 10L and used WLP001. It's midsummer in Sweden tomorrow, the biggest drinking day of the year and this will...

    Small Frustrations...

Think I read somewhere that squeezing the bag opens the holes in the material a bit more letting out more trubby stuff, which sort of makes sense. I'm brewing tomorrow and am going to try filtering the squeezed wort before it hits the kettle. Will probably just line a strainer with my spare BIAB...

    cooper's draugth in new zealand

I think the Coopers yeast has a bit of an undeserved bad rep. As long as you ferment it coolish (20C or under) it is pretty clean. As Kiwis you should be able to get hold of Mauribrews dry ale yeast which is supposedly a forgiving yeast even at high temps. Isn't Mangrove Jacks a Kiwi company as...

Is there a 24hr yeast for beer

There is something similar in Sweden called turbo yeast, basically used by Sweden's home distillers to chew through their sugar mash quickly. Checked a few of the Swedish forums to see if anyone has tried brewing beer with turbo yeast and the general consensus is 'don't do it'. Agree with the...

    Mid-Atlantic SMaTH (yes, SMaTH)

I was thinking Moteuka or Nelson Sauvin for the Kiwi hops but have never used either so not sure what they are like. I have used Whitbread GV once before but that batch is bottle conditioning (on deck next week) and this Friday's batch is going to be an all Challenger Summer ale so it will be...

    Mid-Atlantic SMaTH (yes, SMaTH)

I won't have much time for BIAB brewing this summer so had planned to do four or five single hop extract batches using hops I haven't used before (Citra, Simcoe, Palisade, maybe a New Zealand hop). However, I tried a beer from a Swedish micro last week (East Coast Pale Ale by Sigtuna Brygghus in...

    House Rules for Brewing

Two rules: 1. Only brew when the two year old is out of the apartment 2. The S-airlock has to bubble from right to left

    When is overpitching actually overpitching?

I have recently started using liquid yeast. I brew small batches (5 litres) so do not need to use a starter but do so that I can harvest yeast for future brews. I normally make a 1 litre starter and save half and pitch half. However, I suspect that this might be too much yeast for my small...

    Brewery names--what's your story?

Bad Back Brewing. It's why I do small batches.

    Is eyelash a yeast nutrient?

Thanks Doc and everyone else. I ended up throwing the yeast and regretted it immediately. Bad yeast karma but I plan to use the yeast I harvest for at least five generations from now on and I didn't want my first attempt to get off to a bad start. I did save a small amount of the same yeast in a...

    Is eyelash a yeast nutrient?

Decided to start using Brulosopher's method for harvesting and saving yeast and transferred my first harvest into a mason jar yesterday. This morning I was admiring my efforts in the form of an impressive layer of creamy yeasty goodness. I noticed what looked like an eyelash stuck to the jar and...

Water question from complete science dunce

Hi all I have a question about my water. Since I switched to all grain back in November I have noticed that my beers have a round smooth taste even when I brew a hoppy beer. The FG is normally on target so I don't think they're finishing too sweet. I have also noticed that I barely get more...

    Yeast Harvesting: A Novel Approach?

Thanks Bru, been trying to decide the best way to get more than a few brews out of a yeast as I brew small batches and yeast is too expensive at one vial a batch. Think this looks like the best option. Quick question: when you first pour off 500 ml from the starter and place in the fridge do you...

    Floaty Bits

You have the Coopers fermenter I suppose so you were right to remove the collar. The first response to your post assumed you skimmed off the krausen foam which would have been wrong.

Have I been too clever for my own good? Oxygenated wort?

Hi all, my name is Ratso and up until two weeks ago it had been 12 years since my last brew. Once an addict, always an addict I suppose. I decided to do a few small batches (7 litres, about 2G I think) using DME to get back into the swing of things. One thing I have learnt from this great...
