    Time needed for Propper passivation?

I just thoroughly washed, scrubbed with BKF, rinsed and dried an old keg with some tiny rust areas. How long should I keep the keg open and exposed to air for proper passivation? Is passivation something that takes time or is it instantaneous?

Crushing Specialty Grain without a Mill

Just about to brew the bourbon barrel porter from northern brewer. The directions call for me to crush the specialty grains before steeping them. A mill was not listed as one of the required pieces of equipment. What's my best option to crush the grains I have without having a mill?

    Rust inside kegs

Is there an easy fix to restoring a keg with rust on the inside, or should I probably look for other rust-free kegs to restore? Is it bad to steel wool the inside of a keg or to use BKF on the inside?

    Rubber Degrading on Keg

I have some old firestone pin locks that I have been rebuilding lately. One of the kegs appears to almost be leaching out rubber. I cleaned it pretty thoroughly, and a few weeks later after handling it, I found that it was leaving black dirt on my hands (the kegs were not stored in a dusty...

    Smack Pack Question

Deffinitely missed that on their site, thanks for the heads up... Just curious, how long do you keep the starter on your stir plate for?

    Smack Pack Question

So I just got my bourbon porter kit from Northern Brewer in the mail today, and being a whisky fan I can't wait to begin brewing this kit. :D Anyway, I went with the Wyeast Liquid Scottish Ale yeast for this brew and wasn’t aware it was a smack pack until it arrived at my door today. I also...

    bad carboy?

Nope, the bubbles are kinda sandwiched between each side so no worries I guess. Thanks for your input.

    bad carboy?

I just purchased a new 6 gallon glass carboy for a primary. I notice that there are a few small bubbles in the glass work that are not present in any of my older 5 gallon carboys. Is this an indicator or poor quality or should this new carboy hold up just as fine as my much older ones?

    Removing odors from blowoff tube

I just finished the primary fermentation with my second batch in a five gallon carboy with a blowoff tube setup. I tried to clean the tube asap and let it soak in PBW overnight to get rid of all the gunk in the tubing but there is still a pretty strong yeast odor left in the tube. Will this odor...

    poppet valve question

    Good to know, thanks guys.

    poppet valve question

So I just replaced the poppet valves on my old firestone pin locks but have a minor concern. The old poppet valves were actually locked within the posts when I wrenched them off of the keg. The legs of the valves actually locked themselves into a ring indentation machined into the posts. The new...

    Johnson Controls A419 Probe

I just bought a Johnson Controls A419 controller with a carboy heater and thermowell from northern brewer for brewing in my cold basement. Here's the setup I need to use a blow-off tube in the beginning of the fermentation and therefore cannot use the thermowell included in the kit. Is the...

    Blow-Off Question

I'm currently fermenting with a 5 gallon carboy on my current brew because it was the only size available at the time. I'm using a blow off tube and I am seeing quite a lot of yeast being forced out of the fermenter. With all of this yeast being pushed out of my brew (along with some of the...

    Hefeweizen Question

I know many brewers here are against using secondary fermenters, but I like to use them myself. I just picked up a Kit of Northern Brewer’s Bavarian Hefeweizen. I understand that Hefeweizen is served intentionally cloudy. Because of this fact, should I forgo the use of a secondary fermenter for...

    Firestone Keg Rebuild

I have a bunch of firestone kegs that have been sitting in my basement forever and it’s been years since they have been used. After cleaning them properly and probably replacing the o-rings on all of them is it a good idea to replace the poppet valves as well or is this unnecessary? Also, I'm...

    How Long To Keg?

Should my beer then be stored at room temperature (as recommended for the bottling methods) or be stored at a colder temperature? I only have a limited knowledge of what cold crashing entails so forgive me if I am wrong, but couldn’t I just ice my keg down now, boost my co2 input (which should...

    How Long To Keg?

I just finished my secondary fermentation of a amber waves ale (my first brew):mug:. The hydrometer reading is right where it should be for final gravity according to the recipe. I am fortunate enough to have acquired quite a few corny kegs and have therefore decided to go with a kegging rather...
