    Watermelon Hard Cider

Thread CPR! It's alive! I'm making this just now for a party the weekend after next. Started late so I'm gonna cheat a bit. Some research suggested boiling watermelon juice gives you a nasty mess that tastes like rotten carrots so I decided not to do that. Just pushed 2 fairly large melons...

Considering going to 2 gallon batches--looking for advice.

I do 2-2.5gal BIAB on the stove in the kitchen which is a lot of fun to do. I mash in a haybox (just stick the entire kettle in there) which works great. I'd suggest you build a keezer/kegerator. One of the awesome things of doing small batches is that you can ferment in a corny and use the...

    Scottish Winter Brews

Stick a 1' 40W tube heater in your cupboard or build a small dedicated chamber. Loads of them on eBay from the UK. And I love Scottish ales, been to your wee bit Hill an Glen many times to drink it. Went for the Tennents, stayed for the Caledonian 80-/-- :)

    Bad taste from Silicone Hoses.

Both from Brewpi in the NL. They were very open and honest and I got a discount on the 2nd set because of the smell issues. I wouldn't want to badmouth them; their service and products are great. Because of having 2 young kids I rarely brew these days and when I brew I go for stovetop BIAB...

    Bad taste from Silicone Hoses.

Went through this too. My first set of hoses (which were definitely silicone and bought from a trusted store that sold them as food grade) started smelling bad from the first pre-brew hot cleaning, a mix between solvent and burning plastic (I made sure there was no actual plastic burning :) )...

2KW Induction plate (IKEA), max. boil volume?

Ah I totally missed that in the post. No aluminum won't work.

2KW Induction plate (IKEA), max. boil volume?

Are you referring to the 'Tillreda' hob? I do BIAB on that one with a max boil vol of about 18L which it can do easily. I imagine 25L to not be a problem, even less so if you use insulation.

Tilt - Does it replace hydrometer?

I used a corny to ferment and had to place my phone right next to the keezer to get a reading. Mind that the range should be a lot better for the new version.

Tilt - Does it replace hydrometer?

Yep, afaics it’s a Raspbian image with scripts that autoconfigure a webserver to display the readings: https://tilthydrometer.com/blogs/news/introducing-tilt-pi-an-sd-card-image-download-for-your-raspberry-pi-3-or-zero-w

How much should I expect to invest?

I agree with that, (e)BIAB is a relatively easy and cost-effective way to start and can produce great beers.

Tilt - Does it replace hydrometer?

Got one when I was over in the US this fall, I guess it's not the new model. Used it once, not having to open the fermenter for a reading is super cool. I used the iOS app which sucks, kept loosing my settings, including brewstat.us url so logging was a mess. Going to try to hook it up to a RPi...

    Consistent acetaldehyde issues

Thread CPR'ed, I hope you don't mind ;) I too experience AA for too often; I used to use dry yeast exclusively and always underpitched (as per the instructions on the packets). I recently did a BIAB beer using 33% corn grits (aka polenta) just to get some experience with adjuncts. I made a...

Chlorine or plastic taste in brew using RO and additions

You could buy a TDS meter to test your water source. I have this one and see people recommend it here on HBT.

    Need some motivation and encouragement..

Genau. Hard to achieve for beginner/intermediate brewers who don't keg but bottle but I see OP does keg. I recently started fermenting in a sodakeg and keep the circuit closed after pitching the yeast, I see some improvement in quality. I never had the cardboard taste but did have acetaldehyde...

    Need some motivation and encouragement..

Exactly this. Hygiene, fermentation temp, water and yeast management. If you use good water, make starters and control the fermentation temp reasonably well your beer will be ok, that is to say without the 'homebrew tang'.

    Hello from Barrie Ontario

I will! The only things in Barrie we visited was Wendy's on the 26 and the frozen yogurt place nextdoor :) Have fun brewing!

    Hello from Barrie Ontario

Ah sorry to hear that. An option for you would be to not go to 5gal/19L right away but start small with a 19L pot and do BIAB brews on your stove. You will have smaller batches (I reckon 9 to 10L of bottled beer) but you can go all-grain right away and you will cut your cleaning time having only...

    Hello from Barrie Ontario

hiya, welcome from Holland (Europe, not MI :)). I was in your neck of the woods recently (Springwater), great place! Make your wife a proper cider and she will see the light :)

    What's good in upstate NY?

Ah actually found some, I visited the Creemore Springs Brewery in Creemore ON. Awesome people, great beer. I LOVE their lager! I relieved the local Beer Store of some of it quite a few times!
