    stirplate problems

That has got to be one of the most awesome things I've ever seen. As an IT guy AND homebrewer, that hits the spot on both levels. Lol

If you can make your way to Modesto, CA,I hear Barley and Wine have them for under $40.

    Graduating a Keggle?

I would have used a rod, but based on your guarantee, Bobby, I think I'll take you up on that sight glass. I need to wait for awhile, as I just ordered some things for my mash tun, but you'll see an order from me in the next couple of months, I think. Thanks.

    Graduating a Keggle?

I was leery of the weldless kits, but if they're worth it, I might consider it soon. Thanks for the recommendation.

    Graduating a Keggle?

Curious as to what some of you have done with your keggles in terms of measuring the volume of liquid that you have in it. I've heard of using a center punch or something to mark the inside of the keg at the gallon marks, but my center punch doesn't do the tiniest mark on mine. I like the sight...

1.5 bbl Brew System - mash tun & boil kettle

Thanks. I'm on the HBT app on my Xoom, so when I went to his profile, I could see no useful information.

Chimay Red and Blue must be commonplace?

I always dug on the Taddy Porter from Sam Smiths. And I've noticed them finally switching away from clear bottles. I don't know what it is with British brewers and their love for clear bottles, but for the love of beer, please stop!

    How did you find us?

Don't have time to read this whole thread, but do a search on damn near anything related to brewing or serving beer, and HBT always ranks in the top of results. lol. For example, I became a member long ago, but only really started visiting regularly recently, when I was building my fridge...

If you were to brew a batch of beer for a wedding...

I highly agree with the Irish Red or Cream Ale suggestion. A sweet, brown ale along the lines of Newcastle is another good recommendation, if you don't know your audience. Anything too hoppy or too heavy will be a hit with some, but will turn others off on homebrew or craft beers. A good...

    Increasing efficiecy

Thanks for that link! I need to graduate all the equipment in my brewery. It's another of the gremlins that haunt me. Once I've drained my mash and sparge, how much liquid do I have in my keggle? ARGH! I've tried to use a center punch to get a good idea, but it really didn't mark the wall...

    bargainfittings.com

Thanks for this thread. I put together my own bulkhead fitting with parts I could find at the local hardware store. It leaks, and one of the fittings has some...weirdness on it, due to an Oxyclean soak. I'm ordering a bulkhead fitting from these guys as soon as I can measure my cooler wall.

Newer to the beer making world

Oh, you'll get info, and a whole lot more. Might as well go ahead and start a line item on your budget for "Home brewery". lol. These guys will have you buying and building equipment before you know it. :)

    Increasing efficiecy

Thanks for the heads up. I'm going to consider getting a grain mill. I know someone nearby who might have one, and I'll see if using his mill helps at all. Thank you again for the advice. This is a frustrating problem, but I'm sure I can figure it out. :)

    Increasing efficiecy

I figured the crush would be the likely culprit most would point to. Logically, I'm having a hard time with that simply because Barley and Wine in Modesto is the largest homebrew shop in the central valley. Lots of people buy from them, and they offer to crush all their grain. Seems like it...

    Increasing efficiecy

Shoot, I DREAM of hitting 70%. My calculations show about 52% BHE on my setup. I batch sparge and mash in a 10 gal cooler. Some of the grain in my last grain bill was aged (forgot about it in ziploc), so that COULD account for some extraction efficiency problems, but I was pretty disappointed...

Mash tun manifold or SS braid?

Then that, sir, is an epic braid. It is no mere 6" (or less) of braid like I was referring to. lol. If I had a setup like that, then I wouldn't be concerned about channeling either. lol

Mash tun manifold or SS braid?

That is hardcore! :rockin: Is that your setup, or that of someone you know?

First brew have a few questions?

The above replies are correct. I'll add that if your fermentation temp is a little on the high side, the fermentation can be done even more quickly than normal, though you'll end up with some off flavors. The long time in the fermentor is to allow the yeast to flocculate down to the bottom...

Man, if I wasn't on a motorcycle today, I'd go right over there. I work downtown and am not far from there as I type. :)
