Cream Ale Cream of Three Crops (Cream Ale)

Just doughed in my second batch. I'm making a couple of changes this batch...I've added 1/2 tsp of AE to the Mash tun, and I'm thinking of changing the hops for this batch...I used Hersbrucker and Chech Saaz last time and it came out great. I can do that this time or I could substitute either...

My chocolate stout tastes like crappy chocolate cake...

Aside from giving it more time, time, and more time, I dunno, Splenda maybe? Perhaps you could put some in a pint glass and dispense on top of that to see if it helps? Keyth

Can a kettle screen cause low efficiency?

I believe empirical data. You stated an absolute, that with the equipment in question (mashtun with a bazooka style screen sans manifold,or false bottom), one cannot achieve efficient rates fly sparging. I do it all the time...so your statement is incorrect. I have no problem with those...

    Glass carboys - 6.5 gal @ 5 gal - LOT

Dang, wish I was closer...personally I'd keep a few, I've had a conical for 5 years now and I still use carboys (I like to watch, and have more than one brew going at a time). I really like the conical for yeast harvesting though. Keyth

Can a kettle screen cause low efficiency?

Ah, not if you do it right. I hit 80~90% efficiency and I use a braided hose in my Mash Tun. You only get channeling if you Vorlauf\sparge too fast and disturb the grain bed. It isn't the equipment, its the technique. Keyth

    Oatmeal Stout Yooper's Oatmeal Stout

Brew day went smooth (hot though), missed the target mash temp (trying for 154, mashed @152). Mash Tun smelled like a coffee urn (I think that's a good thing :p ). Now the hard part...waiting. Rolling Boil Fermentation @14hrs

    Oatmeal Stout Yooper's Oatmeal Stout

Thanks for the follow up, looks good. I just used my $14.99 Pasta Roller Grain Mill for the first time on the grist for this one, appears to have done a good job. I'm substituting Kiln Coffee Malt for the pale chocolate malt (I've flipped the Chocolate and Black Roasted Malts as well). I made...

    Would You Use This Yeast?

I don't strain my hops\break from the boil kettle either and my washed US-05 looks exactly as you describe. So long as you're making a starter and then pitching the starter I don't see any problem. The tiny amount of hops\trub introduced from the washed yeast starter is negligible. If the...

    Flat Keg

If you have a way to charge\purge the air in the deadspace of the keg, then trying to reseat the lid seal is no problem (though your leak might be comming from the gas post\poppet). You'll introduce air when you reseat the seal which will oxidize your beer if left in the keg's deadspace. With...

    Flat Keg

You can certainly save the batch. However, if a "Keg Charger" is a 12g CO2 cartridge I doubt it has enough volume to carb a 5 gallon keg. You'll need to force carb it from a real bottle. Next time check the integrity of your keg before you fill it. Charge it empty and leave it for 24hrs...

    Oatmeal Stout Yooper's Oatmeal Stout

How would describe the flavor profile of your version, did you switch the quantities of the chocolate malt for the Black Roasted Barley in order to tame the bittersweet, burnt sugar notes. I imagine yours should have been more coffee\toffeeish(sp?)? Did you still get the right color...

    Oatmeal Stout Yooper's Oatmeal Stout

Has anyone tried to substitute Kiln Coffee Malt (180 Lov) for the Pale Chocolate Malt (200 Lov)? My LHBSs don't stock Pale Chocolate. Interested in opinions on whether or not the Kiln Coffee might take the coffee notes too far. Looking forward to brewing this one up. Thanks, Keyth

Equipment is Coming in, and so are the questions.

Yeah, I'd say you did. :D Give them at least half an hour, rinse them well, if they look clean, Let them air dry. Rinse them again on brew\racking day and hit em with your sanitizer. Sanitation is very important to good brewing, but we're not talking "clean room" conditions. Just do the best...

Need to crush 16# of grain, but no grain mill!

Read this: https://www.homebrewtalk.com/f11/using-pasta-maker-mill-grain-75784/ then go find a Michael's and buy a "pasta roller" in the clay isle (print one of the easy to find 40% off coupons) I just got one for $14.99. I knurled the rollers, but you can just take a drill, run it in...

Anyone use a fox run grain mill?

While it appears we're late to the party on this one, I certainly appreciate the post. I would never have found the "Pasta Mill" thread without your initial post. While $40.00 isn't bad for a budget grain mill like the one in the original post, $15 and one and a half hours in the shop (10...

Anyone use a fox run grain mill?

Of course I could, but why re-invent the wheel, putting a knurl on the rollers is simple and all the rest of the work is done for you. I'm going to swing by Michaels and see if they still have them. As for being cheaper, I don't know. I just did a search on Micheal's and found a 50% off...

Anyone use a fox run grain mill?

I haven't finished reading that entire thread, I will...thanks, but the one the OP listed looks a lot like a re-branded version of the first "pasta" roller shown in that thread...

Anyone use a fox run grain mill?

The price is right...if it works. I can afford to check it out because if it doesn't work...I can make it right... One of my other Hobbies: Keyth
